Guest guest
It is routine in the US for people to store their own blood for surgery. I think you can donate a pint every 3 weeks or so and 2-3 weeks before surgery. Different doctors and blood centers have different rules. You can donate out of state and have it shipped to your surgical site. This is done routinely. You cannot carry your own blood with you. It is frozen and matched for your use. Some doctors will give you back your own blood even if you have not had a major blood loss just to increase your blood volume and help with healing. I did this once for an elective procedure and it worked well and I liked not worrying about needing a stranger transfusion. I did not need the transfusion, but it I was given my blood back. However, while some doctors worry that a myomectomy can lead to blood loss, I loss less than 2 tlb. during mine and my doctor was confident beforehand I would not need any blood. On the other hand, my local doctor wanted me to donate my own blood for a simple hysterectomy. I believe your blood is good for several months since many people expecting transplants etc. bank blood months in advance at a slow rate and don't know when the surgery will be.
