Hey, Donna!

I was told that the ice only works for the first 48

hours, then you must switch to heat. My favorite thing to

do was steam my face over a pot of boiling water!

I didn't remove my own bands for the first three weeks

once out of pure FEAR... I waterpikked my teeth with a

mixture of water and listerine during this time, and I

was lucky that I didn't get any cavities!! However, I

wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

For me, I applied ice almost all the time during my first week post-

op. As well, I remained fairly active. I would say that abt. 85% of

my external swelling had gone down within 5 days. I had zero

complications -- i.e. no increased pain, no infections.

The waterpik + diluted mouthwash is a great idea!

One piece of advice, though...instead of using listerine (a very good

mouthwash), you should always use a non-alcohol mouthwash (Oral B)

initially. The alcohol in the listerine & other such mouthwashes

could aggrevate the wound.

Thanks for the tip. I think about 60% of my swelling is gone already.

As for the water pik, no can use yet. Per surgeon. But I'll try the

mouthwash...and not with alcohol.

i kept ice on my face for 2 weeks and then switched to

mosit heat after that for a couple of weeks. i had

very little external swelling...it felt huge tho on

the inside and just " felt " better w/ the ice bags and

then the moist heating pad. i went by how it felt to

me...prob did it " wrong " but? it felt better...

didn't TOUCH the bands until i was like 3.5 weeks post

op as i simply don't think i could have opened my

mouth wide enough to get them back in wo/ a lot of

pain in doing so. my mouth was sensitive!!!!LOLOL i

brushed around them and rinsed my mouth w/ salt water

a lot which was helpful too....alright..i dumped the

water in and then it ran out all over the place is

what really happened...but? it still helped.:)

make sure u put the waterpik on level one <the lowest>

as it hurts at a higher speed at first...this was

easier and felt " cleaner " <esp cleaning around the

splint> than brushing tho i attempted brushing too.

good luck! :)

Thanks , I am using moist heat and ice on and off now. The

ice does feel good though. I am just about to go rinse with baking

soda and water as in Sue's Zip N Squeeze booklet, that is a helpful

hint.

My surgeon said no water pik yet. I'll see him tomorrow or Tuesday

and we can discuss alternative methods of teeth cleaning. I can't

stand this taste in my mouth. UGGHHH. Donna

My ortho said not to use anything containing baking soda. It weakens

the cement holding your braces on. (I assume your wearing braces) I

wouldn't want things to loosen up right now! You might double check

me on this, but I'm pretty sure about it. Marsha

Just to add to the post-op mouthwash confusion--no alcohol, no baking

soda--and my surgeon advised, in the beginning, rinsing with nothing

containing peroxide either, as it delays healing. He is a great

believer in salt water rinses only. I know, it tastes awful--sorry

about the bad taste in your mouth, Donna.

My ortho also cautioned me, back when we first started, not to use

any baking soda preparations, also because it weakens the cement.
