I DO hyphenate range of motion as in range-of-motion exercises.

Yes, range-of-motion exercises would be hyphenated because it is showing

possession of the " exercises " , however, from what I have been told,

something like " the range of motion was good " where it does not show

possession or it is not linked with the next word it would not be

hyphenated.

For example, this is what I was told:

3-mg tablet

the tablets comes as 3 mg

or

guaiac-positive stools

the stools were guaiac positive

is this making sense? I never knew this until I started this new job, and

they are really big on this stuff.
