House Fire: Mother, 4 Kids, 3 Autistic in Diapers, Lose Home Cape Coral, Florida home destroyed in blaze

Zimmer breaks down Thursday as she arrives to see her home on fire at 1109 S.W. 10th Place in Cape Coral. Zimmer, a single mother of four children, three of whom are autistic, had left to take her children to school and run errands. The house was ruled a total loss, according to Cape Coral Division Chief Tom Tomich.

Zimmer doubled over as she arrived home only to have to watch the smoldering remains of her house from a nearby yard.

When she was unable to stand, a neighbor brought over a lawn chair.

" I'm shocked. I'm shocked. I don't know what to think, " said Zimmer, 34, the single mother of four children younger than 10, three of them autistic.

She could barely manage more than a few words before she collapsed into sobs.

Her Cape Coral home, housing memories and her family's possessions, was gone, with damage estimated at $250,000.

Zimmer's mother, father and sister arrived at her home at 1109 S.W. 10th Place before she did.

After collapsing into their arms, she raced over to a neighbor's back yard where her rescued dog was being kept.

Her children were in school.
