AA is watching you

Hi All

This is part of a post i made to addict-l:

I have a little idea of writing a burlesque verion of 1984

called " 2412 " where steppers rule the planet, BB means " Big

Book " instead of " Big Brother " , and Stanton Peele is the

Goldstein figure (if youve not read the book, the

perpetually hunted leader of supposed subversive

opponents). The

anti-hero is " - " instead of Winston , the

slogans on the Ministry of Truth are:

" Surrender is Victory "

" Disease is Health "

and

" Questions are Stupid "

instead of " Freedom is Slavery " , " War is Peace " , and

" Ignorance is Strength " .

Note the similarity to the Orwell's original slogans, *and*

to existing *A philosophy. the first and third are almost

" straight AA " . With the obsession with the Disease Model

and the importance of accepting it for recovery, the second

could almost be a slogan too.

One slogan I like is " AA isnt for those who need it, it's

for those who want it. "

I'm *fine* with that. unfortunately, dodecamania has

resulted in courts and employers forcing ppl to attend, or

spouses being advised to tell their partner that they will

leave (or throw them out) unless they attend one of the *A

groups. It dominates the addiction treatment field vastly

in excess of any justification in results and science - and

sweeping, completely unsubstantiated claims of universal

applicability, necessity, and effectiveness are claimed for

all ppl at all times.

Imho all of this is wrong and deadly. It needs to be

challenged. if saying the world goes round the sun hurts

ppl's religious beliefs - tough - the truth needs to be

said. If silly ideas are being touted as beneficial -

particularly with so much as a hint of any claim to

scientific value - that silliness needs to be exposed.
