WICHITA FALLS, Texas (AP) - A doctor has been charged with sexual

assault in connection with the alleged rape of one of three former patients

suing him in civil court.

Dr. Webb Key, who resigned from the Clinics of North Texas on May

31, turned himself in Monday and was free that afternoon after posting $25,000

bond. The grand jury set the bond in a sealed indictment handed up June 6.

The civil lawsuit alleges that Key, 56, hooked the three women on

prescription painkillers and made unwanted sexual advances. The lawsuit alleges

Key forced his way into one woman's apartment and raped her Aug. 10, 1998.

``One of her objectives was to have him face some consequences for

his actions,'' Skinner, the alleged rape victim's attorney in the civil

lawsuit, told the Wichita Falls Times Record News.

Key has said he and the woman had sex while she was his patient but

that it was consensual, according to civil court documents.

Key's telephone number was unlisted and he could not be reached for

comment Monday. His attorney, Ron Poole, did not return telephone messages left

by The Associated Press.

Attorneys in the criminal and civil cases are awaiting the results

of DNA tests ordered by the judge presiding over the civil case.

The Texas State Board of Medical Examiners is conducting a probe in

connection with Key, local officials have said. No disciplinary action has been

taken against him, and board officials cannot say if Key is under investigation,

board spokeswoman Jill Wiggins said Monday.

Also named as defendants in the civil suit are the Clinics of North

Texas and its former management company, PhyCor of Nashville, Tenn.

``We certainly want to express our concerns to all the parties

involved because we know this is a stressful situation and unfortunate in how

it's coming down,'' said Dr. Larry Sharp, a Clinics of North Texas spokesman.
