More problems for the Houston Fire Departmnt

(4/30/01) - There are more troubles for the Houston Fire Department.

It's added more ambulances and paramedic squad units to area fire stations.

The only problem is no one's available to drive them. Plans call for

using paramedics from the fire department to staff the vehicles. But union

members say there aren't enough people to go around.

Right now about 400 positions are still open within the fire

department.

I don't understand why HFD doesn't hire for paramedic only positions. I know

so many medics in Houston who wouldn't mind working for HFD if only they did

not have to go though the fire academy. It may not alleviate the personnel

shortage but it may help.

Has to do with the civil service rules in place in Houston.
