Tyler Junior College now offers both the Emergency Care Attendant (ECA) and

Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) courses by Internet.

ECA is a 64 hour course of which 56 hours are taken online and 8 hours are

spent in class for skills training. The course grants 2 credit hours of

college credit. Cost is $77.00 for students who reside in the TJC district

and $107.00 for students who do not live in the Tyler Junior College

district. Enrollment is open and a student can enroll in the course at any

time. A target time of 16 weeks is set for completion of the course, but

this is flexible. Some students have completed in less than one month. This

course satisfies the requirements for firefighter. Skills training can be

arranged locally for students who can't come to TJC.

The EMT-Basic course is also offered online. This course consists of 46

modules which are done by Internet and 3 days (24 contact hours) spent in

class doing skills training, practice, and motor vehicle accident

extrication. The classroom portion of the course can either be done at TJC

or, by special arrangement, at other community colleges or with individual

instructors. After completion of this part of the course the student will

spend 40 hours on an advanced life support ambulance and 40 hours in the

hospital emergency room getting hands-on experience. This course grants 6

college credit hours.

Field experience can be done in a wide variety of settings, with East Texas

Medical Center EMS, Paris EMS, Champion EMS, on County EMS, MedPro

EMS, and LifeNet EMS being some of the choices. Hospital rotations can be

done at McCuistion Regional Medical Center, Saint ph's Hospital, East

Texas Medical Center Tyler (a Level I Trauma Center) and Trinity Mother

Frances Hospital Tyler (a Level II Trauma Center.)

Cost of the EMT-Basic course for in-district students is $246.00, and for

those who do not live in the Tyler Junior College district it is only $336.00

tuition plus books and uniforms, which are estimated to cost around $185.00

total.
