Re: Anyone have experience with selenium?

Dear Marty,

I am sorry I cannot say much about whether selenium is

a chelator other than " I don't think so " . But Andy

recently talked about it being useful, as, I think,

a protective thing against current mercury exposure?

I printed out one of his notes about it, because I

wanted to look for selenium at the HFS.

Just went and found the piece of paper. From a post on

Sept 3rd 2001, Andy says (in part):

" Selenium binds more tightly to mercury than sulfur does.

You take 200 - 500 mcg of selenomethioine per day

(not selenite). This is an adult dose and should be weight

adjusted for children. The seleium captures and passivates

some free mercury. "

Moria

Dear Marty: I would think with this obvious a response to such a " relatively "

mild chelating agent, it would indicate that it might be time to do an

evaluation for heavy metal toxicity if you haven't already. Jaquelyn

Marty,

We give our daughter selinium and never noticed any regressiong with it.

That's not to say it can't happen. I have heard stories of children really

regressing when taking amino acids and various other supplements. I have not

heard that selinium is a detoxifier of metals. I do know that when metals

are being pulled out it is very common to see some temporary regression.

Hope someone can give you more definate answers!

Jane

Selenite is not a chelating agent. Neither is selenomethionine. The

selenomethionine at least will bind mercury strongly however (and

mercury will remove the body's pool of the stuff due to this).

Selenite is often a problem for people. Try selenomethionine.

Selenite may affect sulfite oxidase, which is also affected by

mercury, and this double whammy could be causing what you see.

Hi Andy,

I wasn't able to find Selenometionine at my health

food store. They only carried selenite.

Any ideas where I can order some?

Thanks,
