Guest guest
----- Original Message ----- > Getting back into exercise after major abdominal surgery? Before you go in for surgery, do a lot of work on your abs (to help them heal faster) and back (because your back muscles will take a lot of the burden off your stomach muscles while you're healing). As soon as you're allowed out of bed, start walking. Walk until the nurses are ready to kill you because you're making them crazy. Then walk a little more--it really does speed the healing. That should hold you until at least a week after you get out of the hospital. --A
Guest guest
I can give you a hint about the exercise, wait till the doc says okay. After my hysterectomy I started too soon and kind of had a problem or two.... Surgery scheduled I'm having surgery on Jan 21. Oiks! I'm sort of freaking out about all the stuff I have to do before it starts, but I know I'll be fine. Any ideas for: Good tasting, easy to digest, pancreas ickiness friendly, low point foods? Guest guest
Thanks! That's what I've been doing. I've really been packing on the crunches with the same idea that I want my abs to be extra strong. I'll back off just a little two or three days before so they aren't inflamed or sore. I'll keep the walking thing in mind. I'm the type who, when I'm sitting or in bed, wants to just stay there. I'm either totally active or nicely settled into my bed or chair so I'll have to fight that. I talked to the lady at Curves. She offered to hold my draft (she is a really neat person) for the month, but I said no. As soon as I feel good enough to walk I'm walking down there and just walking at least one time through the stations. No lifting, but I can at least do recovery stations in the morning or something. I can also go to the Y with my husband and walk slowly on the treadmill. I am more concerned with getting out of the habit more than anything else. Guest guest
.. As soon as I feel good > enough to walk I'm walking down there and just walking at least one time > through the stations. No lifting, but I can at least do recovery > stations in the morning or something. Okay, Tory, I'm an exercise junkie myself -- I go nuts if I miss more than a day or two -- so I understand your motive, I really do. But you really ought to discuss this with your surgeon. Popping a few abdominal stitches won't get you into the classroom earlier and won't be good for your health. Yeah, I know doctors can be TOO cautious sometimes, but sometimes rest is the best thing. Just be careful, we want you healthy. Plus, when you're home in bed, I bet you're going to post to our group LOTS and LOTS and LOTS!!!!!
