I may be wrong but I was under the impression that the head of this list

removed attachments from e-mails before they were posted, or this was the way

I thought it was in the past. What has happened to that policy?

- the emails are not being sent through the list. What happens is you

send a post to the list. The person with the infected mail box has the message

unread in a folder. The virus then sends it from the users email address to

your address that is in the message to the list. It doesnt go through the EMS

list with the virus attchament.

It seems that every time we have one of these virus infections people start

yelling at one another and pointing fingers. Warning the list that one

individual's messages are infected is not necessary, and shouting back that

you didn't send the mail is just as uncalled for. If your PC has been

infected, it isn't you sending the virus-laden messages, it is the computer

fulfilling it's programming. Your failure is not having proper virus scan

software.

Viruses and worms are a fact of Internet life and we should all try to

understand this. If you receive a message with a worm payload, the fault

lies with the warped idiot who wrote the program, not with the individual

from whom you received the message. Purchasing good virus protection

software and keeping the signature files updated will help prevent the

spread of these bugs, but it won't stop it. The malicious little pinheads

who write these programs seem to rise to the challenge every time their last

bug is conquered. I can't fathom the mind of such a person, but they

obviously exist. I got an early lesson when in 1985 I lost a huge database

to the Jerusalem II virus. My PC became infected by a program diskette

received from the manufacturer of my computer. Even they were unable to keep

the virus out. This was before McAfee came onto the scene with his

first commercially available virus scan. When it did become available I

purchased the program for about $150.00.

Virus software is cheap these days, particularly when the consequences of

not having it when you need it are considered. I think I paid $19.95 for my

last upgrade. The signature updates are usually included free for a period

of time with extended subscriptions available. I just extended mine for

$3.95 through Symantec. Unless you just happen to be one of the first to be

hit by a new virus, there really is no excuse ever to become infected.

Listed below are URL's for the top two vendors of virus protection software.

Symantec (Norton) http://www.norton.com

McAfee http://www.mcafee.com

I just chatted with on the phone... he apologizes about the virus,

and has unsubscribed from the list until he gets it cleared up.
