" What exactly are these hooks and does everyone who has orthognathic surgery get them? I am scheduled to have surgery some time late summer for Class 3 underbite. I'll be having my upper jaw advanced approximately 4mm and the lower set back about 3mm. I also have a slight cross bite that will be fixed. Guest guest Posted April 24, 2002 Report Share Posted April 24, 2002 Ahhhh the lovely surgical hooks. I'm 9 weeks post op and just had mine removed today...YAY!!!!!!!! The hooks are metal prongs with ball tipped ends that are attached to the arch wires of the braces, stand straight upwards, and are used to string the bands along from upper to lower and vice versa. They sound a lot worse than they are though, Theyre not sharp, at least nothign that a lil wax cant help, just more annoying than anythign else. They are a lil speech impeding too though, I started talking clearer as soon as they removed them today. Really not as horrible as the term " surgical hooks " makes them seem. FYI for everyone whos listening to me ramble at 1am Had my first post op orthodontist appt today, Dr was happy with everything and said I should have naked teeth by the summer...just a couple months to fine tune a few spaces, then off come these lovely braces that i love oh so much <ahem> Eating has been much much easier too, I think that I am more afraid to try things than anything...went out to dinner with my best friend tonight for her birthday. Thsi was my first restaurant experience since surgery and I did great! HAd veal marsala, garlic bread <carefully> and man oh man was it wonderful!
