My daughter has plugged salivary glands, but it is a side effect of Rocaltrol,

we noticed, so I don't know if its from RAI or the meds she takes for

hypocalcemia. She has trouble eating sometimes--mouth so dry she chokes. I'd

be interested to learn more about this, too.

mali her your experiences.

had a TT in 1999 followed by 300 RAI and a year later a

walking dose of RAI.

About six months after treatment she started developing swollen and

plugged salivary gland problems. In addition she also has problems

with her tear ducts plugging up.

She would love to hear from others who have had similar problems

following RAI.

Hi ,

Just a guess here, but the plugged salivary glands would seem more likely

caused from RAI than from Rocaltrol. I have taken Rocaltrol for many years

and talk with many who also take it and no one has ever mentioned this

side effect in relation to Rocaltrol. I hope you get lots of input from

members who have experienced post RAI salivary gland problems.

If you would like more information re: hypocalclemia, we have a website.

It is currently under reconstruction, so please try again if you can't get

in right away. http://www.hypoparathyroidism.org

Best to you and your daughjter,

Hi,

I have salivary/tear duct problems. Had RAI 149mCi in May 2000 and a clean

scan last month (9/27/01), I never took Rocatrol, and am still having

salivary/tear problems. My salivary glands become swollen from time to time

and it feels like someone hit me in the jaw, but it comes and goes. As far

as tear ducts, I don't think mine are plugged as I'm tearing all the time.

It's the worst in the morning and evening, my eyes just leak like crazy.

Hope this info helps.

PT 1/00, TT 3/00, RAI 5/00, clean scan 9/27/01!

I post questions etc. for my daughter who is a busy college student.

We were wondering why so many of you folks are on a special diet? Are we

missing something because she has not been advised to change her diet.

We haven't seen an endo. Her surgeon took her on as his special project (he

calls her " his baby " ) because she was his youngest ThyCa patient ever, and she

ended up with damaged parathyroids, so he has been treating her hypocalcemia and

monitoring her Synthroid levels. He has been SO GOOD to us--we hate to " leave "

him, but if we are missing out on some important information, perhaps we should

see an endo now.

We welcome your advice.

The special diet is the LID Low Iodine Diet, its followed for 2 weeks

before RAI treatments to enable the body to be " hungry " for iodine so

that any remaining thyroid cells (cancerous or otherwise) take up the

radioactive iodine with great enthusiasm (and then get destroyed by

the radioactivity) - its not a long term thing, just a way of

improving the results of any RAI scan or treatment by having the

cells be avid for iodine.
