Guest guest
Hey Jeffery- I have a two year old & just received 150 mci of RAI. I stayed in the hospital for three days & then I stayed at a friends house for an additional three days just to be safe. That was definetly the worse part of the whole thing - being away from my little guy for that long!! ) Kristie dx Pap 2/01 TT with lymph involvement 3/01 More nodes removed 7/01 RAI 9/01 RE: side effects of radiation > How old were your children? Guest guest
Jeffery- When I was diagnosed & had my TT, our baby was 10 months old. She was 1 by the time I had my Rad Rx. Our boys were aged 5, 4 and 4 at the time as well. I was very concerned about holding our baby who was SUCH a mammas girl then. I had weaned her right before I had surgery. I was advised by the nuc med guys to avoid holding her at neck level for more than 15 minutes or so at a shot until I was less radioactive. For many, I think that's just a few days. For me, I was still " hot " when I went in for my post-ablation scan one week after ablation...that Geiger counter was singin'! (I had asked them to check me w/ the Geiger..it's not something they typically do). In light of that, I went a second week without snuggling the stuffing out of the baby and the boys. Probably overkill, but I didn't want to take any chances. FYI- I think the reason I was hot for so long had to do w/ the fact that I'll bet I had a pretty good sized remnant left over from surgery that took up a lot of iodine. Next time won't be so bad. You asked how long I stayed away from the kids....it went like this for me. Had RAI on a Thursday, discharged from hospital Friday AM...went to a hotel Fri & Sat nights and came home Sunday afternoon. THIS time, if I have to have RAI again...I'm going to lock myself in our newly finished guest room in the basement for a couple of days and eat take-out! Have you read the info at the thyroid manager site? (http://www.thyroidmanager.org/Chapter18/18-cancerframe.htm) It gives radiation precautions that seem reasonable. Lastly, I have complete empathy for your wife. It's tough enough having a new baby at home without having it complicated by thyca and all those visits to the docs. Where is she at w/ all of this? Has she had her surgery yet? Let me know if I can help in any other way. Barb TT Jan 01 ~3 cm pap thyca RAI 100mCi Mar 01 RE: side effects of radiation How old were your children? Guest guest
My side effects were the following: Sore jaw line - everything was tender from neck to saliva glands. Burned tongue - couldn't taste for about 1 month My hair fell out - from being hypo (not RAI) Nauseated from the RAI for about 5 days. Extremely tired! Headache I had these during my last RAI which was 150 mCi's. Guest guest
I had the same, jaw pain (sometimes horrible), swelling and hair breaking off, it lasted for about 8 months post RAI, 149 mCi. It's been 1 1/2 years now since my RAI and from time to time I still have jaw swelling/pain, my dr's tell me that my salivary glands are most likely permanently damaged and I will probably always have problems with them. But I'll deal with it, my last scan was clean!!! Lynn in New York PT 1/00, TT 3/00, RAI 5/00, clean scan 9/27/01!
Guest guest
, I have had some similar symptoms with my jaws. I had 150mci RAI. The day after receiving the RAI, I woke up looking like I had had my wisdom teeth removed, big time chipmunk cheeks, swollen from the RAI. The swelling went down with ice and tylenol helped with the discomfort, but my jaws have ached since. I assume that this will eventually go away, it's been 6 weeks since my RAI. Today, I noticed that my hair was falling out, only proof that this takes quite a bit of time to recover from. Best of luck and good wishes to you! pap/fol thyca pt 05/01, tt 06/01 RAI 150mci 9/01 Synthroid 125 mg > >> >Kim, > >> > > >> >I had 29.9 mCi. Guest guest
, My gums bleed for about a month after RAI, my face hurt, my hair broke off, and I had nausea. Try to keep your salivary glands working by eating lemon drops to make your mouth water and the doctor can give you something for your nausea. Hang in there. Guest guest
In my experience, intermittent pain and or swelling of the parotid glands (which are in the cheeks and the angle of the jaw) and the sub-mandibular glands (below the jaw) are the most common long term side effect of RAI. Usually people have pain or swelling for a day or two that comes and goes in intervals of weeks or months. Guest guest
I have serious pain in these glands almost all the time (especially about 3 hours after eating) and I had my RAI (206 mci) last December. I am beginning to think it's not going to get better and as ther's a good chance I will need more RAI I am VERY worried about it getting even worse.
