Guest guest
Dear All: Many of you who have been on this list for a long time have known that I had seizures as a child until I turned 5 years old and had my tonsils and adnoids removed. Our daughter, Amy, was born into the Kaiser Permanente system and we have tried to get Kaiser to remove Amy's tonsils for ni-on 20 years! We had an oppertunity t change HMO's and went to the Blue Shield- HMO/POS system last January. With the switch came a new neurologist who suggested sleep studies for OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnia). Amy had the test this past monday! Guess what? The want to remove her tonsils and adnoids! it seems she doesn't need a CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) system, but the weak muscles in her throat and neck (caused by (?) suspected mito-myopathy) coupled with her tonsils and adnoids obstructing her breathing pathway constitutes the removal of the formentioned! Yippie! Hurray! Fa La La La La, La La La La!!!!!!!!!!!! It is my prayed that Amy's seizures will improve when these are removed. At the very least she wont keep the whole household awake night after night and won't be so tired in the days from waking herself up all the time ! We see the Neuro on the 16th, then hand carry the results to the PCP (primary care Physician) that very day, then wait for a referal to see a surgeon and a date for the surgery. We are hoping the Surgery will be in May so Amy is well by June for CBS (Campus By the Sea) family camp & Woodlief camp with Young Life. These camps are important to Amy...and to our family! I'll keep ya'all informed. Thanks for letten' me spout. it's nice to have people to share with! Lynnie Wife, Mother, Advocate

Guest guest
My daughter, age 24, had a sleep study in July. She didn't know she had any specific problem but was tired (literally) of not sleeping. She just felt like she never really slept through the night and never felt rested. Like you, she is a mouth breather but not really a snorer. You might get some info on the sleepnet.com website. She did the sleep study in desperation because she needed answers; insurance covered 100%. She was subsequently diagnosed with sleep apnea. I don't know if that is the only reason BCBS authorized upper/lower/genio, but it was all authorized. If you were diagnosed with sleep apnea, that would probably indicate medical necessity for the surgery. But the only way to know if you have a sleep problem of that nature is with a sleep study. Would your insurance pay for that? FYI, sleep studies aren't cheap. Good luck! > Just wondering how many of you had a sleep study done? Did you think > you had sleep apnea to begin with? I don't snore but talk in my > sleep but often feel tired even after 8-9 hours of sleep. I wake up > several times a night and am a mouth breather. Wondering if I did > the sleep study if insurance would then cover.
