I had the drainage tubes under jaw and also the gastric tube and breathing tube. I looked just like Miss america too. My swelling has gone down a bunch and my neck isnt as sore as it was last week..Its more sensitive then sore. I was also supposed to get just bottom done until about 3 months prior... to achieve maximum benefits you really should have upper and lower done Doc said... So I did... I like my new profile and for that I am pleased .. its too early to say much about the inside of my mouth as my teeth are much more crooked from the surgery then before I got the braces.. I need some fine tuning:) I can say though that my top and bottom molars touch and its awesome! I saw my x-rays a week and half ago and my bite looks perfect... couldnt believe I now have 7 plates in my mouth... kind of eerie thinking about it. To tell you the truth, I don't read much (because of the lack of time) and when I do--I try to read the Bible. I find lots of comfort in reading the Word and going to church. I wish I could get more involved. Plus, it's part of my recovery. If you all didn't figure it out--I'm recovering addict/alcoholic. [Hope that doesn't affect the way you all think of me. I felt the need to tell you because that is who I am or should I say who I was. I am completely clean and have been for awhile now. It's hard not to think that what I did in the past couldn't have affected . All the doctors have assured me that it was nothing I did, but I still wonder.] That's what I mean when I wish there was just a couple extra hours in the day. So much I want to do but not enough time. Plus I can't seem to let anyone watch . I don't trust anyone. I sometimes don't even trust , his dad. I'm much better than I was but still very protective. This past week, she's been ill with a virus that turned into bronchitis by Fri. She's been improving over the weekend. Even with that -- she's not any sicker than a typical kid would be. We're so fortunate. I have been knocking on wood because this is her second respiratory illness since she lost both PE tubes last spring. Neither infection led to ear infections! I am hopeful that she is over that hump -- I guess her little eustachian tubes have finally grown enough to stay infection-free. Her communication has been helpful now because she can tell me how she's feeling. With each illness, I see an improvement in her ability to describe her symptoms and in her cooperation with the doctor. On Sat, she was watching a video (her favorite pasttime), got up and came to me, lay her head on my lap, and said, " Mommy, I am weally, weally sick. " That night, I went in to her room in response to her crying out, " Mom... Mom... Mommy... " This was about the 5th time she'd awakened coughing needing a drink and her music turned back on. So I did the drink and music thing and asked her if there was anything else I could do for her. I didn't understand her reply so I asked what she'd said. She said, " Leave the room!! " with a dramatic point to the door! Apparently, she'd said " leave " the first time. She's definitely got a mind of her own! When she was 's age, I never dreamed that she'd be able to talk so well. Strangers are beginning to be able to understand her sometimes. Her teachers and our friends and family can understand her much of the time. But still -- even Dad doesn't always understand her. I'm still her best interpreter. And boy does she get frustrated when I don't know what she's saying!! Another great thing recently was that a friend invited her to dinner without me and she went!! We were going to go as 2 families, but I got tied up and couldn't leave early enough so they offered to take her without me. I thought she'd shy away from the idea, but she was ready as ever! I was thrilled because my friend, the parent, felt comfortable enough with her speech and behavior to take her independently. Gotta run. I'm exhausted tonight... I would never have known how much she understood if she hadn't signed. Also she didn't get so frustrated because she could communicate with us. Now, her signing has dropped to nothing really.
