Guest guest
Dear Group, I have been a member of this group since January 2000, and I am very thankful for all the giving of information, thoughts, and feelings, that got me through some rough months. Your sharing made me much more knowledgeable, caring, sad and happy at times, and lets not forget the letters that made me laugh on days when I needed to!! I had also hoped not to go the hysterectomy route, especially since I was feeling so good after the UAE (April 2000). Unfortunately, my fibroids had started to grow again this past spring and I am right back to where I started. The UAE procedure blocked two arteries in the uterus with pellets, but because I had two other arteries opened blood was able to flow to the fibroid making it grow again. If I was ready for menopause the tumor would have possibly started to shrink...but I am still getting my period. I often wonder, if a UAE is performed before the fibroids reach the size of a grapefruit, would we have a better chance in shrinkage than waiting it out? I know for me that I had waited and suffered so long that I was almost ready to have the hysterectomy right away. I do not have any regrets regarding the UAE procedure (April 2000). If this surgery or any other can stop fibroid growth ...than GO FOR IT! I am 52, had fibroids since I was in my thirties, thyroid problem stated in my early forties (I'm on synthroid), at the age of 49, one of my fibroids started to grow inside and outside the uterus and it was then and is now really starting to make me feel ill. I have two grown children, a loving husband, I just want to feel " normal " and truly want to start to enjoy the quality of life again!! I am scheduled for a hysterectomy on October 26, 2001. To all those who keep sharing their information, thoughts, feelings, and prayers . ... I wish you health, and happiness, and I pray for peace in your life and so many others if this world. As always thank you Carla, Marsha, my friend, (will e-mail you soon) and so many others for all the time and input that you give to this group. Guest guest
Hi again =I figure if you already have kids, or you don't plan on having any.....what the heck eliminate the problem. My Dr. is a down to earth lady(peg w/ twins!)and she also advises go for it-she says they usually do come growing again anyway so why not rid ourselves of future headaches! I'm 46, and my periods are so heavy for years now-even with maxipads & tampons I have to hit the b-room every 20 min.! I won't miss it a bit! Think of the clothes, sheets, monthly supplies...talk about a savings! Geez-I quit smoking one year ago and can pay my taxes on that savings-now I think I'll save for a getaway:) There is always a good side with everything. Guest guest
Hi Jill, I was also under the impression that there were only two arteries that led to a fibroid, but according to my GYN there must have been more than two because blood found a way back to the fibroid to make it start growing again. I need to share some information with you and the group...I am part of a study for UAE's at Wood Hospital in New Jersey. My GYN who recommended the procedure works with a Radiologist. After the UAE was performed (April 2000), I was closely monitored. In December 2001 I began spotting off and on and after numerous MRI's, Ultrasounds, (which found a few cysts on my ovaries) I was told I needed a D & C. The results in February were not that great. The fibroid had only shrunk from a grapefruit size to a navel orange. In May 2001, I started to bleed (somedays light and somedays very heavy) and did not stop until July 2001. Right now I would bet that little " devil " is the size of a cantaloupe. I am back to feeling extremely tired, cannot and do not even feel like walking (and that is an exercise I love to do)! All I can tell you is that this fibroid is taking all my nourishment and energy from my body and I cannot enjoy life this way. What I love about this " Wonderful Doctor " is that she did not rush me into to making a decision. She talked to me in August, and then again in September, and when I was ready, we set up the appointment for October (by the way because my blood count fell so low..she also had to put me on an iron pill). I hope that someday, by the time my daughter is in her forties, that there will be a " Choice " for her to make and hopefully by then it won't have to be a hysterectomy. As always, please keep sharing your information, knowledge, thoughts with others, I know it really it makes a difference. Peace to all! I'm sorry to hear this has become necessary for you but I'm sure your positive attitude will see you through this and will speed your recovery. I couldn't help being curious about what you said about two arteries being blocked and two others being open. I guess I've been under the impression there are only two branches of the uterine artery - is your case very unusual? Was there any medical explanation for what happned to you and why? Hope you don't mind being asked this. Again, hope all goes well for you on the 26th. Sincerely, Jill >>

Guest guest
My younger sister also had a vaginal hyst in July. Although she is feeling a little better lately, she is by no means back to normal. Her recovery has been much longer than my myomectomy even though I had an open abdominal incision and she did not. Her doctor is now telling her she cannot prescribe any more pain medication because she's afraid my sister may be becomming addicted to it. I haven't had either procedure but at this point I would not recommend a hysterectomy to anyone. Hopefully the next few months will see things improve for her and I'll change my mind but this has been a very bad experience.
