Guest guest
This answer will be very unpopular on this list but when we did not see high levels coming out with my son despite high hair test results, I felt he wasn't absorbing the DMSA as well so persuaded our doc to do a few rounds of IV DMPS. I had talked to parents of several kids who had done well with this treatment and felt in my gut it would be appropriate for my son. The metals immediately poured out with the DMPS and he experienced a rapid improvement. You do have to carefully weigh the benefits of bypassing the digestive system with the dangers of doing anything by IV and pulling alot of metals quickly but it was extremely helpful for my son. After several rounds of DMPS, we did return to oral chelation which seemed to work better then as well. For those concerned about the IV but don't seem to be pulling metals the tests show are there, perhaps a few rounds of oral DMPS might be wise since it is supposed to bind to mercury better than DMSA. Another thing that I think may help some kids who aren't eliminating properly is to have them do a round of the homeopathic drainers I posted about last week prior to chelation. If your body can't eliminate well, chelation won't work well. Gaylen
Guest guest
Hi Gaylen, I just wanted to say this is great: you are informed about the risks of various options, and have considered the options. I am wildly in favor of people having choices, and knowing about what is involved. It is also wonderful that this worked out well. I'll bet you also did a great job of watching the results and considering the details (how often to get the injections, how much to use, when to stop, retrying oral, etc) (If I were going to do it I'd be very cautious about the amount of DMPS.) I also wonder if a higher dose of DMPS or DMPS might have gotten things moving, but it is a moot point, since you are long past that issue. More power to you! And thanks for sharing this. Curtis was on a higher dose of DMSA for a few rounds early on. We did see aluminum, arsenic and lead but very little mercury in urine tests. We did not know mercury was a problem until switching to DMPS. The doc did recommend oral DMPS when I wanted to change but I was concerned that his digestive problems were interfering with him being able to absorb the chelator so we opted for IV. Interestingly, I've been watching many cases of kids being chelated over the past few years using a variety of chelators and protocols. The only cases of major problems I've personally seen or talked to parents about involved those using the DAN protocol for chelation. These are fairly rare still, only 8 kids out of probably 50-60 I know about, but those I personally know of who have gone into major seizing or had severe regressions were not the ones I know who have done IV DMPS but rather ones using DMSA/ALA or doing the full DAN supplementing/chelator recommendation, most on the every four hour protocol and under the care of a DAN doctor new to chelation (which the majority of them are). Guest guest
Pat - I was told that Mercury is the last toxin to come out when you chelate because it binds so well to the organs (brain, liver, etc.). mom to Dean (autistic) Pat Gallagher wrote: > Dear Listmates, > My 10 year old son has had 5 rounds of chelation, 3on, 4 off using the 3/4 > hour protocol. Guest guest
My son is now 12, weighs nearly 150, and has been chelating for over a year on evolving protocols. We didn't see mercury in a stool sample 6 months into chelation, or in other tests run here and there. But I was told by many, that a child this old and large would have tightly bound mercury that would be very slow to come out. We did see immediate improvements (probably because we had eaten fish, and had other metals coming out, too) but now are in the long slow haul of waiting to get the tightly bound stuff out. The improvements now are slower and steadier, with the " toddler mischief " stage that Jane El-Dahr told me is common, behind us. Make sure your son drinks lots of water, and try the four-hour protocol if you haven't already. Lorilyn

My son DJ is 12 years old. We started chelating back in October 2000 (DJ was 11). We had lots of tin, lead come out. Some nickel and aluminum. We never saw mercury at all until our last urinalysis this past June. We started 100mg dmsa every 4 hours. After three months we added ALA but the doctor changed the protocol to 300mg dmsa every 8 hours and 100 ala every 8 hours 3 days on and 4 days off. We've were doing this for several months and even though stuff was coming out (we try to do urinalysis every 6 weeks), we haven't seen any improvement. We did start noticing some regression and when I read back in the archives, I realized that most were doing every 3-4 hours protocol and Andy feels very strongly about the 3-4 hour schedule. A couple of months ago, DJ got up very early one morning and got the key and left the house. The police found him 2 miles from my home and were just waiting for the 911 call. Very scary experience because he never did that before but thank God he was fine. A couple of weeks ago, he found the hair clippers and cut off all of his hair. I was just thankful that he's a boy and we were able to shave it all off without him looking too bad. We decided to go back to every 3-4 hours (100mg dmsa and 25mg ala) but want to slow it down to 3 days on and 11 days off. This is our 2nd weekend and I'm still hoping for the best. I hope we didn't make DJ worse by doing every 8 hours. I sent in a urinalysis on Monday and should hear the results in a week or so. So you see, it was months before we saw any mercury at all. Our kids are older and it has been stated that it does take longer.
Guest guest
, I hope you'll post the urine and stool results (along with normal ranges), as I'm curious how they compare to each other. Your experience (no improvements, no mercury, other metals showing up) is what I was told by our DAN doctor would happen - that other metals have more afinity for the chelator and will show up first, and improvements won't be noticable until the mercury starts to be eliminated.
