Veteran Houston patrolman killed in car accident

HOUSTON - A Houston police officer was killed today when his squad car veered

off Interstate 10 and crashed just east of downtown.

The officer, identified as Carlton J. , 38, had been with the department 17

years, police said.

Investigators said the car was westbound on the interstate about three miles

east of downtown shortly after 3 a.m. when the car veered off the road, flipped

down a steep embankment and came to rest on its roof in the front yard of

residence. There were no other injuries.

was not known to be going to a call nor pursuing a vehicle when the

accident happened.
