First time I've noticed a sense of humor from the good doctor. I like it!

Dear ThyCa Members:

I hate to disagree with our favorite radiation safety officer; however,

there is no need to stumble blindly around in life. I advise all of my

patients being treated with radioiodine to wear their contact lenses,

dentures, and other internal unmentionables as much as they wish. This is

contingent upon the following guidelines:

1. The item must be one that other people do not wear or handle (who else

wears your contact lenses?).

2. The item must be able to be reasonably cleaned by typical techniques

(wearing dirty contact lenses is painful anyway!).

3. The item must be reasonably necessary (i.e. it is important to be able

to see, but it is not important to wear a pearl necklace).

4. Exceptions are permitted for items which cannot be removed (i.e. wedding

bands after 30 years and fifty pounds).

Regular hygienic practices applied to the care of contact lenses, dentures

(replace the denture brush after the first week), scalp and skin will also

maintain surfaces free of avoidable contamination. Shared surfaces (for

example: toilet seats and sink bowls) should be wiped with damp tissues

(which are flushed). All patients undergoing these procedures should be

prescribed high doses of common sense, administered daily.
