Guest guest
[note: duplicate post to Uterinefibroids and Embo groups] I have just had my 3-month follow-up for a UAE for two fibroids, one subserosal and one intramural. I had an easy time with the UAE (see posts #7386 on uterinefibroids or #10461 on embo, if interested) and was back at work in a week. I had no post-UAE problems – no fever, no infection, no unusual discharge, minimal pain. Here are the ultrasound results: Fibroid 1: pre (5.7X5.8X5.7) post (5.5X5.0X5.7) = reduction in volume of 16% Fibroid 2: pre (5.4X5.3X5.4) post (4.4X4.5X3.7) = reduction in volume of 52% Uterus: pre (11.2X10.8X10.9) post (11.0X9.2X9) = reduction in volume of 31% The ultrasound technician said the reduction in volume was from a 16- week uterus to a 14-week. (According to the NUFF site, a normal uterus is approx. 8X10X6.) My symptoms have definitely improved. My periods are shorter and lighter, the bowel and bladder pressure is relieved, and the occasional sciatica is gone. My pre-post FSH tests (a test of ovary function) showed no change. Also no change in my overall weight, and no change in the length of my cycle. I have noticed some improvement in my abdomen externally, but I still have a bit of a paunch. I am working with a trainer in the Pilates exercise method (more about that in another post) and that seems to be helping. So, I am quite pleased with the outcome so far. I avoided major surgery, kept my uterus, and got relief from symptoms. My only regret is that I didn't have the procedure earlier, when the fibroids hadn't gotten as large as they did. But my gyn was opposed to the procedure, and I had to do a lot of research on my own before I felt comfortable enough to go against his advice. I will go back for another ultrasound at 6 months and again at 12 months. If I can answer any other questions for those considering this option, please let me know. This group's support while I was weighing options was tremendously helpful to me.
Guest guest
Thanks for that post, it's great to hear you are doing so well and progressing nicely on that shrinkage. I hope you will keep your gyn (who was opposed to your doing this) appraised of your great progress!
