It's terrible, the only thing worse would be to have no insurance at all. We

pay from 10.00 to 40.00 CO-pay per prescription. That comes to roughly 170.00

a month.

I agree that co-pays are going out of this world!!!

Ours used to be $10, now they are up to $25 with most

of mine being in that range. I take 7 different pills

and hubby takes 3 a day. That can get really high!!

I get a three month supply of strips and lancets (testing twice a day) for

$35.00. For some reason, my Tamoxifen has gone up to $70 (3 month supply).

Going to call my insurance to find out why.

My husband just got a supply of Lantus. Then the Dr. changed his meds and he's

no longer taking it. I hate to waste it by throwing it away when perhaps somone

could use it.

Anyone have any suggestions about who I could contact or what I could do to give

it away?

I don't have a problem with co-pays. I don't have insurance. My meds

are just under $400 a month (I've been lucky with samples for most,

so far), and my strips are about $75 a month, give or take on how

many extra times I have to test. That isn't counting doctor visits

($125 if nothing extra), eye doctor visits, dentist visits, blood

tests, other tests, and a $11,000 hospital bill I acquired in

January. Add to that all the extra meats, vegetables, and fruits I

have to buy now because I can't have a 99 cent bag of chips for

supper anymore. Plus, don't laugh, but I never cooked, so I had to go

buy pots, pans, crock pot, etc.

I'll trade with anyone and take your co-pays. Count your blessings.

And please take this tongue-in-cheek because I consider myself lucky

that I can handle all these bills. So far.

When I received the meds from WalMart, I called the pharmacy to see why we

were charged $70. She told me that Tamoxifen was on the list and I should

only be paying $40 (our co-pay went up $5 on some meds). I'll call the

insurance person next week.

If I was getting the supplies on a monthly basis I would be paying $20 per

month (co-pay). When we use the mail order service for a three month supply

our co-pay is $35.00. If I was testing 4 times daily (at doctor's request)

and getting double the amount of supplies, the copay would still be $35.00

quarterly.

Flo,

I've donated testing supplies to a Certified Diabetes Educator who

works with many folks who don't have insurance. I suppose a CDE in

your area could recommend a way to pass your Rx surplus to needy

folks. Is there NO chance your spouse will ever go back to this med,

though?

I think the " contamination factor " is the reason insurance companies

don't get involved in " recylcing " unused prescriptions.

Diabetic supplies for HSMM/CTA employees ('s employer) have to be ordered

from National Diabetic Pharmacy. They are located in Roanoke, VA. Other

prescriptions are ordered from Wal-Mart Pharmacy located in Texas. We cannot

go to the local Wal-Mart and get a 3-month supply.

I can give you NDP's 800 number and you could call and ask about prices.

Thanks for the suggestion Rennie. Hmmmm. When we see his Dr. on Monday I will

ask if he is expected to go back to Lantus. If she says no, I'll pursue another

way to use the drugs.

Thanks for the suggestion.

---Ins. co. probably made it the high priced formulary. Our Co. does

that with no warning. That is why I had to switch meters because my

strips doubled in price, so I had to switch to what they are

currently pushing. I much prefered my old meter but... My husband is

still on the old one. The comfort strips come in a bottle with a

vacuum sealed lid which was too difficult for him to open. So I just

let him keep using the old one.

How in the world do you get the strips so cheaply? I

just started getting insurance to help pay for them.

I paid $30 for 25 strips!!

, in some states, diabetes supplies are required to be covered by

insurance. Both my husband and I get strips and lancets free, also Medicare

pays for them if you have Medicare. This is in Tennessee. Check into it

because those strips are so expensive.

---Here in Pa they are not required to give them free, but cut the

cost of them. That seems like a high price is paying. I get

200 strips for 18.00 and my husbands are 200 for 35.00. The

difference in prices is because one is formulary and the other non

formulary. In other words, the ins. company is pushing a certain

brand over another.

We're in Pennsylvania, but we sure don't get anything.

I don't know anything about getting strips through

insurance. We buy ours at WalMart at full price.

In fact, the bills Thane had for his heart problem and

leg problem that the nurse from the college said she

verified and the insurance would pay for--they're not

paying. In fact they put them into collection. That

collection place even calls on Sundays and it's all a

taped message!!!!!!!!!

We can't get a break for nothing!!

first order of Insulin, and told me my insurance don't cover insulin

any longer. Until they send me the bill in December request payment

of two vial of insulin total $210.00, and that cost me $105.00 per

vial of Insulin. I know the street price cost for Insulin is $20.00,

and I will not pay 5 times different of that amount. I drop them all

together when I find out I could get my test trip somewhere else.

When their A/R calls me last week ask for payment, and I told them I

would not pay five times more for market price.

Wow that is a lot. Humalog here is 50.00 a vial, and lantus 80.00.

That is the drug store prices. With the co pay it drops down to

18.00 and 35.00. Our insurance is mandated by the State to help with

the cost of the insulin and strips and oral meds.

---Yes, the insurance will help with the cost of the strips.

They don't have a choice. It is mandated by the State of Pa. Also

get on the phone and call them about your sons meds that haven't been

paid for. It is their responsibility to pay for them since they were

declared covered. Otherwise, there must be a place to call for

complaints against an ins. company that is not doing its job.

I have a $10.00 co pay, but one time I went to pick up my meds (I had 3)

and she said that will be $70.00. I said that can't be right. The doctor

had forgotten to check that a generic was OK so the real drug was not in

the $10.00 co-pay range. Just a thought.

Bill:

I found a diabetic nutrition class given by a CDE by contacting one

of the local hospitals. My insurance paid for the class as it was

referred by my primary care physician.

I found the class to be very valuable. By understanding the

relationship between blood glucose levels and carbohydrate intake as

explained by the instructor, I was able to lower my readings

significantly.

Hope this helps.
