Why? No idea, but he's always been very healthy looking - no signs of malnutrition (at least not externally) With four children (3 NT), I've always tried to think - what was different (pregnancy, labor & birth) about . This is what I've come up with: - At 5 wks gestation my husband and I took a trip to London where the bus fumes were so bad that I was terribly sick most of the time (this was my 1st trip outside the states) I've read that diesel exhaust has mercury - anyone know for sure? - I have 10 silver amalgams and while this has not changed with any of the kids, I did have my teeth cleaned while I was pregnant with (none of the others) - was born in Jan, 1997 - can't remember if contact lens solution was using thimerasol then? (anyone know?) - He was the only of the four to have bilirubin at birth (don't know of any connection - just something different about him) - He was the only one induced with pitocin (I've heard conflicting reports - can anyone tell me if pitocin contains mercury?) - He was the only one of four that had an abnormal alpha-feta protein test - can't remember exact scores but he was moderately high and re-test came back normal Other things contributing to his toxicity that would be same for all my children - He's had all vaccinations except booster (we only got a dx this past April - he will not receive any more vaccinations) - We live in Florida 2 miles from a garbage dump that burns (I've read it turns to methyl-mercury gas - anyone familiar with this?) I've been a member of this group for awhile (and have learned lots!!), but this is my first post and I must apologize for its length. I do have two questions: - we've just sent hair sample to be analyzed and my Dr. believes that we will find a lot of lead because of Chris' gross motor delays. Has anyone experienced this? And once lead is removed (or reduced) are they able to re-gain those skills? - does anyone know if there is any way to test a baby (or even better, a fetus) to see if they are sensitive (allergic??) to heavy metals? Is this in the works? Thanks so much, Kirsten

Guest guest
I'm not sure about how much mercury toxitity affects the fetus compared to how much it is effected through breastfeeding. Both my babies were average birth weight (7.9 and 7.6 pounds). I gained a lot with them, though. My first I gained 62 pounds and my second I gained 78. I was underweight before both pregnancies, so I wasn't overweight acoording to what I should weigh during pregnancy. I believe I read on Bernie's site that breast milk is a good carrier of mercury. I can tell you that Logan was breast feed for his first 2 weeks and showed no signs of autism until vaccinations. Toby is still breast feeding at 15 months (and I had a ton more amalgams put in between pregnancies) and shows autistic traits already. He toe walks, hand flaps when excited and has already lost his only two words " mamma " and " dadda " . Of course he is still too young for me to know for sure, but I do see the signs. He is starting an early intervention program next week and I'm getting his hair tested at Logan's next doctor visit. Guest guest
Andy, My autistic son was 9 lb. 9 oz.. We've always wondered if may be it had something to do with the birth process, although my son developed normally until about 18 months. I can think of several questionable things. My water broke but I was in labor for 12 hours after that, Pitocin was used, vacuum extraction was used (with great force I might add). But he was definitely a big boy at birth and my NT son was only 7lb 2 oz. F. Guest guest
Austin was very small 2lbs 5oz. I am sure that I am toxic. To make things worse, he was vaccinated at (approx) what should have been 34 weeks gestation. He wasn't even 4 lbs. I gave him all of his vaccinations on time (actual age -- not corrected age which was 12 weeks early). It breaks my heart. Guest guest
ne, My ASD son was born 5 weeks early and weighed 5lbs8oz. I only gained about 25 pounds while pregnant with him. He didn't display the " regressive " type of autism, but just slow progression. He may have been born toxic, as I ate tuna almost every day and had 6 amalgams already in place. I don't smoke, workout and eat very healthy (Except for tuna at the time, not knowing) My NT 2 1/2 yr old son didn't get vacinated until after age 2 , I didn't eat seafood at all while pregnant and he was born healthy at 6lbs 8oz. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Guest guest
My oldest daughter, now 22 was the only one of mine induced. She has some developmental problems that has always been attributed to the fact that the amniotic fluid was meconium stained- signs of baby already being stressed in utero. She weighted 8# 15 oz. (17) weighed 9 # 3 oz. Not induced, minimal IV pain medication. He's the autistic one. Had a filling replaced that broke during pregnancy. Younger daughter (14) is NT. No Pitocin, same pain meds. Weighed 9# 11oz. Had all immunizations including an extra HIB by accident when changed peds. All were breastfed and supplemented the evenings I worked. Breastfed all over 1 year. NT daughter breastfed until 18 months. Don't agree that size has anything to do with it. Also don't agree about the breastfeeding issues that often come up on this list. Breastmilk is by far the best for the immune system and properly functioning bowel- much less likely to have leaky gut with breastfeeding. Cows milk formula causes different intestinal flora and isn't properly digested- more likely to cause problems. Unless the mother is toxic. I used to believe I did the best thing by breastfeeding, now.. well I wouldn't do it over again. " The more I learn, the less I know " -could there be a more fitting phrase with ASD?

I ate lots of tuna and all types of other fish, I am RH- and was vaccinated during pregnancy, and all the shots that my son had before becoming symptomatic. My son was also induced with Pitocin. The DTP shots did my son in by about 9-10 months of age thinking back. He started showing some very, very subtle signs.
Guest guest
'Tain't necessarily so. According to the American Lung Ass'n, 11% of babies born to smoking mothers are of low birth weight; they don't say what % of babies born to non-smokers are low birth weight. I'm not saying it's good to smoke during preganancy, but amoking does not by any means guarantee a low birth weight. I know I'm mercury toxic; I was dx'd with fibromyalgia years ago and my personal dental and medical history points to amalgam. Of my three children, one is autistic; they weighed 8#6oz, 7#15oz, and 8#9oz, with the last one being autistic. Had rhogam shots after each birth, and breastfed them all. What really sent my son " over the edge " was vaccinations, but I believe he was born with a mercury load. Sounds as though your child had good nutrition, but I don't think that indicates toxicity one way or another; genetics seems to determine birth weight, more than anything. Hope this helps. -- In @y..., marib005@h... wrote: > Listmates, > > It seems to me that if a child was born toxic, getting the mercury > from mom, they would be of low birth weight. Guest guest
I have three children - my oldest is 14 and NT. She weighed 4lbs and 14 oz at birth. Apgars were both 10.(somehow she had gotten her umbilacle chord in a knot), is 7 and has autism - he weighed 7.4 lbs at birth. He did have bilateral club feet but apgars were 9 and 10. My third is 4 and she is nt also. She weighed 7.4 lbs at birth and apgars were 9 and 10. did have an awful pre-delivery. I was giving my mom CPR at 9 months pregnant. (she had a heart attact infront of me). Broke water at 9 pm two nights later and he wasn't born till almost 24 hours after that. He came out and I was only 1/2 way dialated!!!! His head was in a litteral point like a pyramid! Birth Injury, involving head but they vacced anyway. ...and club feet. Still vaccing. Held off 15 months dpt, mmr combo till 20 months because of ear infections. Waited 30 days after antibiotics and then allowed the vaccines. He had a major seizre 9 days later.... the rest shall we say is history. Maybe it just isn't one or two things, but a whole mess of combo's for each child is different. I had 7 amalgams in my mouth and got two put in while breastfeeding him. He had multiple surgeries to help correct the feet. I have dx's of " hyper-activity " , dyslexia and according to tow dr.s I meet the criteria for Aspergers. My poor son didn't have a chance. > > Listmates, > > > > It seems to me that if a child was born toxic, getting the mercury > > from mom, they would be of low birth weight. I'm still nursing my 15 month old and have people telling me to stop. I know Toby is getting mercury from me, but I feel putting him on something else will make the problems worse. Guest guest
Hi! I just joined this list and had to speak up about the breastfeeding. We just found out (hair and blood tests) that my PDD-NOS son has toxic levels of aluminum, arsenic, copper and so on. The hair was a 4 month old baby hair sample, so this indicates so far, that it came from me. I breastfed him for 2 1/2 yrs. I am currently breastfeeding my 16 month old daughter and she has absolutely no symptoms, so far. I will go through the testing myself as soon as we get my son situated. I think this indicates that my son has a defective gene and my daughter does not???I am still not clear about this. Jane
Guest guest
Jane, I have not have any testing done yet, but I tend to agree with you on this. My 5.5 yr old son has Aspergers and my 2.5 daughter is OK. I breastfed both, although only 4.5 months with my son and 6.5 months with my daughter. My son has also been the way he is now from the time he could sit up- rocking in crib, temper tantrums, did not like to be held unless on his own terms, etc. I really just thought it was a personality type at the time and still do in a way. I plan to see about testing myself as well, but I agree with your genetic theory - plus my son had 2 sets of ear tubes/exzema and adenoids removed all before age 2. Guest guest
Males are more affected by mercury than females are. That may be why there are 4 times more male autistics than females. Guest guest
Hi Jane, welcome, I'm not sure if you are asking about the meaning of the baby hair results or if you are just speaking about your thoughts. Regarding the defective gene, it is not clear if the " defect " CAUSES (precedes) mercury/metal poisoning, or if it IS CAUSED BY (follows) mercury/metal poisoning. It could even be both. (That is, it could be that metal poisoning CAUSES the " defect " and then the " defect " leads to even more metal poisoning.) I don't think which it is is known. Anyway, I don't know that it matters all that much in terms of what to do about it, which is to get the toxic metals out. best, Moria At 06:25 PM 8/9/2001 EDT, you wrote: >Hi! I only gained 22 lbs. during pregnancy. All the exposure in utero would seem that it would pick at him little by little and then when he was born he was exposed little by little and a little more and more....I could be wrong, but all these changes and damage that mercury causes is a gradual process, damaging the way the kids digest, damaging their nervous system, damaging their immune systems. Its not something that just happens right then and there at first exposure, it takes time for these things to happen and get to to the degree they are now. Just my opinion.
