Guest guest
I will be posting my progress periodically for the interest of anyone who is considering UAE. I had it done Sept.27. My cramping increased on the 4th and 5th day after, and then has been subsiding. I have little pain now. I am still spotting a little bit. I haven't seen any softening or shrinkage of my abdomen yet. I'm very impatient to see what my results will be as far as my next period (in about 2 weeks) and as far as shrinkage. I do feel better today-more energetic, more 'normal', more like going about my usual activities. The doctor said my next 2 periods will probably be fairly unpleasant, possibly with some foul smelling discharge. I guess it will be several months before I know if it worked or not. Guest guest
lisa- it is always so encouraging to hear of a good outcome from the UAE procedure. I dont have heavy bleeding, just bulk symptoms, pressure, and my abdomen is getting larger. I want to do something soon... Elise Browning wrote: Elise, Have you checked the archives of the Embo list for post-UAE results? If you put " post-UAE " in the search box, you will come up with gobs of posts. Of course, the posts may not be as long after UAE as you would like, but there are some 9 months, 12 months, and further. There are more short-term results than long-term, but you can scan the captions and read what you like. At over 1,000 archived messages, there's bound to be quite a few. I just passed the 6-month mark myself and am doing great. My quality of life was restored 100% after UAE (at least so far - I know some women have reported having problems later, but I feel totally normal at this point). I had very little pain as it was controlled by the drugs I was given, and I was off all but the anti-inflammatory (Celebrex) after 4 days. I was told to take the Celebrex 7 days, but didn't need it or anything else after that. No slimey discharge, but I did have spotting before and after my period the first 3 periods or thereabouts. It was very light - only needed a panti-liner. As for the pellets, I know PVA pellets have been used for years for other treatments with no ill effects. I had Embospheres, which I don't think have been around as long, but anyway this wasn't a concern of mine so I don't have much to add about that. I think I have read that someone (group?) is studying whether the use of Embospheres causes less post-UAE discomfort than PVA, but I doubt the results are in yet. Best wishes, B. Re: 8 days post UAE - I hope that your fibroids shrink down to nothing. I do want to say I hope you continue to update us, as I am very interested on post UAE outcomes. I think three things scare me - 1. the pain! 2. fear of getting the slimey discharge some women have been getting for months afterwards. 3. worrying about what happens to the pellets years later inside of you. elise

Guest guest
Elise, I had bulk symptoms as well, and not the heavy bleeding. My fibroid was 8 cm at the time of my UAE and has shrunk 35-50% since then (3/30/01). I think my good results have a lot to do with having the UAE before the fibroid got bigger. I have written several times and the messages are archived, so I won't repeat myself here. If you have any questions, though, feel free to ask - privately or to the list, as you prefer. B. Guest guest
I am curious. What instructions were you given prior to your UAE? Were you told not to eat for a certain length of time before the procedure? Any specific instructions? I have scheduled my UAE. I appreciate the updates. I am curious about what I need to do to prior to the procedure. Thanks. Guest guest
Elise, I am now almost 3 months post UAE and have written many posts about my surgery and follow up. (check the archives using my name). I am very glad that I tried UAE. At my first post op check up the doctor was able to just pull the entire fibroid out! (It had been 7cm in size and part in the uterus and part in the wall) Anyway I want to address your concerns. 1. The pain. Listen I don't know what your history is, but my screaming back pains, cramping, bleeding and all the rest were MUCH worse than the pain and they lasted much longer than what I had with the UAE. Think of it this way, a couple days or so of it to not have to deal with all the rest. Remember ALL of the options given to us that are surgeical have some level of discomfort and pain, some last longer than others. They give you drugs that you administer as you need them, so it's not that bad. Just know that you need to keep ahead of the pain by watching the time and taking them when you need them. 2. The slimey discharge. I've had it, still do but I just wear panty liners or light day pads it's no big deal and nothing to be afraid of. I lived through horrible bleeding before this UAE and almost died from a loss of blood, passing huge clots. That is what I am much more afraid of. 3. As the others wrote the information so far shows no ill effects. Is it taking a chance, sure but it was one I was willing to live with. I choose to keep my uterus and only remove it as a last resort. sergery > - I hope that your fibroids shrink down to nothing.
