Caregivers' Wages as Medical Expense

Over the weekend my mother's accountant notified us that caregivers' wages

(note: not housekeeper's wages) may be counted as a medical expense and may be

deductible from income when calculating taxes. This is only true if the patient

needs assistance in at least two ADLs (activities of daily living, which are

feeding, bathing, toileting, ambulating, transferring, and dressing).

Also, keep in mind that med. expenses must reach 7.5% of AGI before being

eligible for the deduction (and next year that may go up to 10% - ouch). For

more information go to http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p502.pdf
