Guest guest
Hi everybody, I discovered this very valuable discourse by the author of "Prostate Cancer for Dummies". Dr. Lange and his friend and colleague write of their own experiences with prostate cancer and subsequent surgeries. It is lengthy but worth the time. They discuss not only surgery but the impact that a diagnosis of PCa had on them. Both surgeons state that the curative benefit of surgery over other treatments is unknown. They each wanted the pathological clarity that comes with surgery and Dr. Lange says that is the only reason to select surgery all other conditions being equal. They also both say that a large part of their decision was due to the crap they would have taken from their fellow urologists had they gone with anything but surgery. If you don't believe me read for yourselves. Dr. Lange is still cancer free some 8 years later, Dr. Schellhammer's cancer is back. Dr. Lange did Dr. Schellhammer's surgery. If you don't read the entire piece, at least read the last part titled Final Reflections and Conclusions. These are right on target and enlightening. Guest guest
This is a piece by two urologists who wrote it with other doctors in mind. They wanted doctors to realize a little better that the situation my look a little different to the patient than it does to the doctor. Dr Schellhammer has worked with VPCC and is the current president of the American Urological Association. I strongly recommend that everyone reads this piece. We have it on the VPCC website also. I have distributed over 100 paper copies to interested individuals. Kathy From: ProstateCancerSupport [mailto:ProstateCancerSupport ] On Behalf Of LaurelFace@... Guest guest
Debbie, One thing to remember is that the doctor is there to answer your questions. You hire him. There is no such thing as a bad question or one that you shouldn’t ask. Everyone should be an empowered patient and an active part of the treatment team. I went with Bill to his appointments and I was the one who usually asked the questions. Bill was relieved to have me take that role. I am glad that this article helped you. I will let Dr Schellhammer know. Clearly they wrote it for doctors and patients. I feel that this is the most honest paper written regarding treatment options and quality of life issues I have read to date. A must read for all. Guest guest
Comment on the article referenced by Laurel: I will start by asking a question: " Do you think that this article would have ever been written if these two gentlemen had not experienced prostate cancer? " I think not, and it reinforces the ongoing theme expressed in this forum that we must take charge of our own medical issues, and decide what is best for us as individuals. To do this it may be necessary to " stand up " to the MANY arrogant men in white coats that think that they are all-knowing, and if they will not work with us in deciding the right course of action, and will not answer questions, LEAVE that practice, and find one who will. They exist, believe me. The doctor (referenced in another post) who sent the local biopsy results off to Hopkins for a second opinion ON HIS OWN is probably one such. My own first urologist (the one I " fired " ) would not even help me to do it; I had to find out how myself. Irrespective of one's leanings or opinions on the 'best' treatment for prostate cancer, this is MUST reading. The authors (urologists/surgeons) are to be commended for their candid discussions of their personal experiences in dealing with their own prostate cancers. Candid is the word I was searching for and the 2 doctors certainly were. Laurel
