Guest guest
: By chance do you have any photos of old 389, the Dodge stepvan we inherited from Gold Cross? I think that rig's heyday was before you joined the CrowderCrowd - I think you were still with Bumbleburger, I mean Baumgardner, at the time - but I believe it was still on the road by the time you started with RC. If you happen to come across any pics of the ol' beast, maybe I can arrange to get copies? Guest guest
Gene, Back to the original siren sounds question, I remember going through a pursuit training class in police academy back 11 or 12 years ago, and recall that the DPS trooper teaching that particular class had some interesting thoughts on the use of the siren. According to him: * The wail setting was best when traveling on longer stretches of roadway, because the sound was fairly easy to hear, and the slow changes of pitch made it easy for a person to mentally process the direction from which the sound was coming. * The yelp setting was best when approaching intersections, because while the quick tone changes made determination of location more difficult, people were more likely to notice the sounds than they might the wail. * He said that he rarely used the air horns or phaser-type tones. Now I don't know if his statements were based on any research or just on his personal experience, but I figgured that it seemed like good advice to me. I've followed those general rules ever since. As far as the research goes, I'd bet that the Department of Public Safety has some data on siren tones, and I'm pretty sure that the feds have some, too. I'd guess that the best place to look up federal info would be at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center over in GLENTCO, Georgia. I also seem to remember hearing that Texas A & M had done some research on this topic several years ago. I'd contact the Texas Engineering Extention folks (TEEX) up at A & M's Riverside Campus in College Station. Hope this helps! P.S. I think the tractor-beam idea has the most potential... Guest guest
Gene, I don't know if this will help you much because I have not done research directly on sirens. About 25 years ago I did an extensive research project on the effects of ultrasonic sound on rodents. From this it was determined that it is not only the strength (dB) of the sound but the type of sound wave being generated. A pure sinusoidal wave was not nearly as effective as a square wave at a given intensity. It was determined the reason was that a square wave produced not only the frequency being generated but a number of harmonic frequencies. From this there was effectively produced a complex number of frequencies that were more easily detected by the rodents. It would be interesting to see what the difference is in the sound produced by a electronic siren vs. a Q2 type. I know from experience, as you surely do, that the Q2 or wind type siren is much more effective and is heard at a greater distance than the electronic types. I do not believe that they produce a much greater measured intensity, but because of the type of sound they produce and the frequency range they operate in they are certainly the best tool for the job. I will do a little more probing into this area and see if any light can be shed on this. If you want to chat more about it you can hit me on my email at clem609@... Guest guest
The basis of this is wail has a long wave length, with very shallow depths, with carries very long distances but not very far left or right. The yelp on the other hand has very short wave lengths that are tall in depth, these can be heard around corners, over hills and so on but not very far down the road. hope this helps explain DPS's idea.
