back around 1980, did a study on siren sound levels published in the Journal

of Environmental Health, it did look at the frequency range that was

produced by the different siren modes (wail, yelp, and hi-lo). However, the

study was directed at the sound level and possible hearing damage; also at

compliance with OSHA regulations regarding sound exposure. I don't have

copy of the reprint anymore, but it should be available through a library.

The work was done at Eastern Kentucky University.

Gene:

There was an article published in JEMS some years ago on just this subject.

I no longer have issues that far back, but I think it was in 1992 or '93. As

I recall, the findings were that wail is most effective. Yelp was

significantly less so and other " cute " siren sounds were considered

ineffective because they were often not even recognized as a siren. I'll see

if I can track it down, but you might see if anyone you know has a JEMS

archive dating back to the first half of the last decade.

Agree with Dave about the hearing loss. That's what prompted me to start

looking into frequency effectiveness, since it's high-frequency loss that I

have. From years of being underneath the speakers.

The Qs can easily be mounted on a bumper extension. has

extensive experience with them mounted there at DFW airport where he worked

for many years. They were the only thing that worked in the

high-background-noise envirnment there.

I would like to see a graph of the frequencies generated by the Qs as

compared to the electronics. I'm not a physics person, so I may not even be

asking the right questions. Somebody help.

I have been told that the wail is better, because it

hits a broader range of tones.

What type of ambulances do ya'll have at DFW Airport? We use F350 turbo

powerstroke chasis. Not sure if their is a place to mount one. The 2000

models don't allow for the bumper extension since we have dual airbags!

having the Q2 mounted on the roof. Talk about hearing loss!!

Barry:

I, for one, advise against mounting sirens on the lightbar ABOVE YOUR HEAD.

Not only do the people you are trying to move get a good dose of the ol'

sonic disruptor (ah, the Q2. The only siren that increased your speed by 5

mph by turbo thrust!), but so do you, your partner, and both your ears.

Today I suffer a significant level of permanent hearing loss (nerve

deafness) from many years of such exposure. I have been trying for years to

decide if my attorney and I should plan on taking possession of Federal

Light and Sign, but he'd probably get the bigger half. If you have to mount

them there, I strongly advise that all crew members be required to wear

hearing protection while traveling in Code 3 mode. I had a shirt-tail kid

partner about 25 years ago who always wore firing range ear muffs on calls.

I used to laaaauuuuggghhh! Well, I'm not laughing any more.

Back in Crockett we had one mounted on the overhead bar (complete

with a Federal speaker and pair of bubble-gums) on a 73 low-top

Surburban. We could rattle the glass downtown and once we had a

police escort in Tyler (the federal went out and we needed a little

help from the local police), we used our Q2 siren to move traffic for

the escort in front of us. Man, those babies were great. I wonder if

you could mount them on a push-bar if it had enough clearance from

the bumper outward to miss the grill?

Dave, agreed. The ambulance we had with the Q2 on the roof was just

because that's the way they did things back in the early 70's.

Everything I've specked, installed or worked out of since the

mid-80's had all the siren speakers either under the grill or on the

bumper.

And you are so right about hearing loss. WHen the siren was

on, either of them, communications was through shouting and hand

signals. When the Q2 was on, you were thankful to be in the back of

that old Surburban because even through it was loud, at least you

were behind the sound and not in front or under it.

And I'm not laughing about the hearing protection either. So hit the

switch and pass the headphones.

Now you are bringing back memories that I had stored way in the back of my

Back in the early 70's I worked for an ambulance service in Louisiana ( I won't

say where since this person did not do very well in Texas) that had 3 (yes I

said three) Federal Q2's mounted on the roof of the old Pontiac Catalina station

wagons we were using back then.

When you hit the buttons one at a time, you sounded like all hades breaking

loose, and comin' down the road.

Dr. Bledsoe,

Do you or anyone else have pictures of those earlier units? I would love to

see some if somebody has some to post on here, or send to me privately.

If sending to me privately, send to bwiseman@...

Stay safe,

I have some posed photos of Ray Crowder 424, which had one of the first six

modular ambulance boxes mounted to a 1975 (or was it 76) Ford chassis. This

was the rig in which Capt. B. (who now only drives jet powered

flying ambulances, th' lucky dawg!) and I terrorized the citizens of South

Fort Worth back in the bad ol'days. I scan 'em and send 'em if you like.

Gene:

I know that the highest frequency response of the Q2 is lower than that of

most electronic sirens. The worst damage to human hearing from these beasts

appears to be in the higher frequency range that is common to both types of

siren. Either type packs enough decibels to shoot those little sensor fibers

in the inner ear all to hell. Sadly, the damage typically involves the

higher-frequency portion of the human speech range. This is why it is

characteristic, so the audiologist told me, for people so damaged to mainly

notice it as difficulty hearing what other people say.

I wonder if one of the university physic departments could do that type of

measurement, maybe as a student project of some type? Although I'm sure that

someone somewhere has already done that work and has that data.

How many of us that teach in EMS (who are already effected) put an

emphasis on hearing protection to our students? Granted, noise standards

have changed, but why risk damage unnecessarily?

Dave,

That would be great.....When I went to work in 1991 (all of a sudden I'm old

too!) we still had 1 gas truck that would haul a*% of course, you had to

refuel after each call too.

Thanks,
