Hi, Pupship ( & Pete)--Going back to school helped me a lot. I got back in touch with interests I'd let fall away while involved with AA. Four years ago, when I left San Francisco,I moved to a town where I knew ABSOLUTELY no one. I'm not terribly social, butI've managed to develop a circle of wonderful friends despite my minimal efforts.I started going to a busy coffee house every Saturday morning; the ritual helped mefeel a little more anchored, and after a while the regulars started to say " hello " and draw me in to their conversations. I got to know some of them well,and they introduced me to other people, who introduced me to others... It takes time, and patience. It helps to figure out what sort of people youwould like to have as friends--I picked that particular coffee house because itdrew the college-professor/artist/oddball crowd, whereas the other place I likedcatered mainly to people who drove around with kayaks on the tops of their Subarus, wore extremely agressive-looking hiking boots, and asked for soymilk decaf lattes. I don't know what your interests are, but if you pursue them, you'll eventuallymeet other people who could turn out to be great friends. I took a job in a book-store because I'm a biblioholic, and made some great, nutty, booky friends. Ithink that being in the same places all the time helped--the same coffee house, the same bookstore job--because it let people size me up over a period of time, even as I was checking them out. Don't groan, but this is one of those situations where theadvice " keep coming back " works!
