Metro Parkland administrator MacGregor Day dies 03/14/2001 By Louise Applebome / The Dallas Morning News Hospital administrator MacGregor Wood Day was the quiet, behind-the-scenes type who didn't seek the limelight but steadily achieved results, friends and co-workers say. Mr. Day, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Parkland Health and Hospital System, suffered a heart attack March 4 and died Tuesday at Parkland Memorial Hospital. He was 57. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria at Parkland Memorial Hospital, 5201 Harry Hines Blvd. in Dallas. Private burial arrangements are pending. " Mac gave his whole life to Parkland, " said Dallas County Judge Lee , who often worked with Mr. Day on issues involving the county hospital system. " From all spectrums, he was trusted and respected. ... He will be a tough act to follow and hard to replace. " Mr. Day began his 27-year career at Parkland as director of administrative services. He had held his latest position since 1989. " During our 20 years of service together, Mac and I were a team balancing the vision and reality of operating Parkland, " Dr. Ron J. , Parkland's president and chief executive officer, said in a written statement released by the hospital. " His total devotion to Parkland and our mutual respect and friendship will be deeply missed. " In addition to his operational and executive duties, Mr. Day served on the boards of the Parkland Foundation and the Parkland Community Health Plan. " He was extremely effective, loyal and dedicated, " said Kern Wildenthal, president of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Dr. Wildenthal said Mr. Day was responsible for much of the success of the Parkland hospital system during the last two decades. The two men were friends and colleagues for 21 years. Mr. Day earned master's degrees in business from the University of Dallas and in project management from the University of Texas at Dallas. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of North Texas. Mr. Day was also a fellow of the National Association of Public Hospitals Management Fellowship Program and served in the Marine Corps reserves. Mr. Day's job at Parkland required diplomacy, Dr. Wildenthal said. " He had the tact, humor and patience to deal with superstar doctors ... and was able to build consensus in his quiet and capable way. " Mr. Day is survived by his wife, Kathleen, of Dallas; his daughter, Marisa Totten of Fort Drum, N.Y.; a sister, Deborah of Buffalo, N.Y.; and one granddaughter. Memorials may be sent to the Parkland Foundation, P.O. Box 45148, Dallas, TX 75245. © 2001 The Dallas Morning News Privacy policy 2000, 1999 winner for best news-related Web site 1998, 1999 best online newspaper in the state Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Award
