Ac-tu-ally! Barbara I didn't know that! Congrats! And what a great story about your two boys! Would that we could get that shown nationwide, sigh! You all might be interested to know there was an article in TIME magazine, in the Jan 2000 issue titled " Sounds of Silence " . It is about infant screening. I was more than a little miffed when I read it and the following paragraph is what did it for me. The first part of the article talks about how many states are implementing Infant Hearing Screening (now stands at 22, I think) and that audiologists estimate that 3 babies in every thousand have a hearing loss, and 1 of those 3 will have a profound loss. Also, the failure rate of the test and what kinds of things can " skew the results " To quote: " It's at this stage that things get a bit complicated. Though 20 of every 1,000 babies fail the two-step screen, most prove on further examination to be just fine. Is it worth worrying 17 families of perfectly normal children-not to mention asking tehm to spend several hundred dollars on advanced tests-to identify three infants with hearing loss? On the other hand, what if you are the parent of a child whose disability might otherwise not be detected? " I just came away from the article feeling like this woman, Gorman, did not think that infant hearing screening was a good idea!! Thought you might be interested!!! I will be typing up the article later today so if anyone wants a copy, let me know! (Off list pls!) Orla

No I don't but I wish I did! I will ask at school to see if maybe the families nearer NH get it. Maybe I can have them tape it. We are also trying to get such a bill in Maine although I am a bit discouraged with the process for our family. Eilish had her ABR at two weeks (she is now 2 1/2). Patric failed the newborn screening at the hospital and yet at almost 7 months we have no relaible ABR results to show for it so in our case the newborn screening did not improve our services..... Guest guest
Barbara Mellert wrote about infant hearing screening. I hope it goes through in your state. I'm in Florida and that legislation was in place for my 3rd child. My 2nd child has a severe-profound loss due to meningitis at 3 months of age. I've often wondered if perhaps she was born with the loss. Well it was great to know my baby, now 6 months has already been screened (at 1 day old). Good luck! Guest guest
Suzette, My son also has a severe-profound loss due to meningitis (as a newborn). I would wonder too if he was born with the loss, except that the hospital did an ABR a day or two after he was admitted, and found that his hearing was normal. Then they did another one at six weeks and the results were quite different. Do you know if they tested your daugther when she first developed meningitis? > Barbara Mellert wrote about infant hearing screening. I hope it goes through > in your state.
