This is from a friend whop no longer lists alcohol among

his problems....

-------------

Spent some time Sunday afternoon vaporizing clouds

while sitting on the fishing pier at the

Point VA Medical Center.

A couple of guys from the addictions ward were

joking about how weird the guys from the psych

ward were.

For some reason they didn't laugh when I told them

my opinion about the main difference between the

two wards... I told them that the guys on the psych

ward were better medicated.

They tried to teach me " how it really is " but gave

up when I told them I'd been there, done that, took

pictures and bought the T-shirt. Oh, and since this

is only an 11-step pier I'd be glad to help them on

their merry 12-step way.

The main difference between the psych ward and the addictions ward is that

in the psych ward you're more likely to be treated as a responsible adult

with a temporary problem, as opposed to a wayward nincompoop who needs to be

brainwashed for life. Must admit my sample size is small, at least for psych

wards <G>.

Hi Wally

This is interesting, as ordinarily one would say it ought

to be the other way round: aparent perhaps from one-off

suicides, who in the UK dont tend to be kept in much

anyway, then those in the Psych wards often do have

lifelong problems whereas there is no reason to believe

addicts will.

I saw the abstract of a paper on staff attitudes to psych

patients - those viewd most syumpathetically were mentally

retarded, followed schizophrenics or manic-depresives,

followed by alcohlics and by drug addicts. L:owestr of the

lo were those with peresonality disorders. Ive

encountererd this attitude in ppl working in the field

myself.
