DISTRICT 13450 W. Sunrise Blvd. Suite 150 Sunrise, FL 33323 Phone: Legislative Assistant: Ellen Navarro District Aide: Hadjipetrou Representative SUSAN GOLDSTEIN Your VOICE in Tallahassee Dear Neighbor, The sales tax holiday is here again. I have included in this month’s newsletter all the information necessary to make your shopping plans more desirable. I will also be visiting many cities throughout our district during their Commission Meetings to share in the ceremonial check presentations for park related improvement projects in the community. I encourage you to contact my legislative office regarding the actual dates, as I would love to meet you. I have received an overwhelming amount of constituent correspondence regarding homeowners insurance. I urge you to also communicate all of those frustrations to ratehearings@...; this e-mail was set-up in lieu of the poor response, as reported by the media, regarding the most recent rate increase public hearings. Always remember, if you are having difficulty negotiating the red tape or bureaucracy of a state agency, please feel free to contact my legislative office or send me an e-mail. We stand ready to assist you. Warmest regards, Attention Shoppers! As you are aware, SB692 – Sales Tax/School Supplies and Clothing – passed both the House and Senate. This bill specifies a period during which sale of books, clothing, and school supplies are exempt from tax on sales and other transactions. Here are some details about this year’s tax-free shopping days: The tax-free days will run from July 22nd, 2006 to July 30th, 2006 Tax-free items include books, clothing, footwear, and accessories selling for $50 or less. Also exempt are school supplies selling for less than $10 To be tax-free books must be $50 or less each. Newspapers, magazines, periodicals, and audio books are not considered books and are still taxable. I encourage you to visit the web-site that has been set up by the Department of Revenue, which gives you a detailed publication of all the items that are tax-free. http://www.myflorida.com/dor/tips/pdf/tip06a01-04.pdf Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP) projects the 2006 Legislature Funded in Your District This year proved quite successful for District 97 and its local municipalities. With the help of local governmental officials, in defining where state assistance was needed, we were able to secure the proper funds for our community. I have listed below numerous cities along with their projects, and encourage you to get involved in the ceremonial check presentations that will be held throughout the district. I would also like to extend my appreciation to all of the local municipalities that applied for this grant program, and I look forward to working with all of you again in the upcoming legislative session. Goldstein Every year during the legislative session special projects are sponsored in every district by their corresponding Legislator, also known as Community Budget Issue Requests (CBIRs). Through this process various municipalities and local non-profit organizations identify their budgetary assistance requests and submit them through their district’s legislative office. Our office received an overwhelming amount of CBIRs this year, and luckily we walked away with quite a bit of necessary program funding. We hope to continue to receive these requests in the future and look forward to working with all local municipalities and non-profit organizations.
