Hi Donna,

I have 2 ideas for you to check out.

The first one is that bananas are high in " salicylates " (which is a

sort of subset of phenols, I think?????) -- you can look at that.

The second one is that it might be from the natural sugar in the

bananas. does fine with them, but if I give them to her in

the late afternoon, she has trouble getting to sleep at night. So I

just make sure to give them earlier in the day, and there's no

problem.

Hi, I just wanted to add one more reason to kids having problems with

bananas. I have noticed with my 21 yr old son and have heard from

other moms here that organic bananas with less or no chemicals used

are well tolerated by special children. The ones we get are from

Equador, I think.

Actually, bananas are high in phenol, However, NOT high in

salicylates but in AMINES (another phenol subset). AMINES are what is

controlled in the Failsafe diet.

My daughter can't tolerate high phenol fruits, whether salicylates or

phenols, just pears. However, veggies seem to be okay so maybe it is

a sugar related issue?

For those of us in the US, all of our bananas are grown in Mexico, Central

America, or further south.... In many of these countries, their laws allow use

of pesticide sprays that are outlawed in the US. So... I always buy organic

bananas..... they aren't usually very much more expensive than non-organic.

Same goes for grapes and some other fruits, by the way...... usually grown

south of the border and sprayed with who-knows-what.

I was going to say the same thing. Luke is sensitive to salicylates, but

bananas are very low in these, and so he tolerates bananas fine, eats 2 a day.

But other phenol sensitive children have trouble with them. Weird.

in NC

Mom of Luke, age 5, Asperger's/highly sensitive to

phenols & salicylates/diarrhea & gas problems;

, age 3, healthy; and , 19 mos, healthy

All SCD since 1/26/04
