Re: Stantone Peele/was another friend's demise

Hello, Snowy & all----

Regarding Stanton Peele, if I have to recommend ONE book, it's his The Truth About Addiction and Recovery.

<band strikes up, cannons thunder, fireworks> That book really saved me, and anyone who has been part of this group for very long knows by now that I will push it at the slightest provocation <Laugh!>.

I just read Pete's latest post before I read Snowy's, and if you haven't checked it out you might want to give his Love and Addiction a whirl--the title seemed too Pop-Psych-Pablum to me for a long time, but I bought one for my store's inventory and ended up reading it. A lot of his ideas about the nature of addiction are featured here, but he points out that the Love jones is perhaps the nastiest of all. I got a lot out of it, which is good,

because I recently met a brilliant brainy babe that I could be a real junkie for...<Mona smile>

Cheers,

Thanks for all of the info, Ben. I'm going right to the website after I

In the only indexed reference to Alateen in " Diseasing... " , Peele refers to

it in passing as " a group for children of alcoholics " . Elsewhere in the same

book he discusses the fact that large numbers of children are (actually this

is more true of the 80's) being forced into treatment and then coercively

induced to join AA.

I remember that when I first read Peele's books, 5 years ago, I tended to

split hairs in order to disagree with him and defend AA in my mind.

Eventually I figured out that, as a result of various attempts to recover in

AA, I had developed all sorts of mental " work-arounds " to the commonsense

view that AA is a load of bunk. One of the effective defenses of most AA-ers

is to seize on any evidence that a critic " doesn't really understand AA " and

then just stop listening.

It is important not to underestimate the effects of treatment/AA

brainwashing. It is possible that if you read Peele from the perspective of

the AA mindset you may have actually hallucinated in order to deflect his

message.

-Hi -

I like the part with the cannons, etc.! :o)

I went to the website tonight and downloaded some info to print out. Very interesting. I'll keep this book in mind. Thanks for telling me about it.

Hi people, Stanton has a NEW book out which I saw at Duthies on Robson in

Vancouver tonight. Save your pennies. Also don't forget that wonderful

peacemaker Vince Fox who bridges the gap between traditional and

non-traditionists in his superb " Addiction, Change and Choice " , 1993.

Excellent research and logic. Cheersfully, Carol

Also Edelman has a new book which demythologizes the madness wrought

over youth drug use. I'm sure it is wonderful. I met and talked with

when he was in Vancouver last month. He has just had dinner with

Stanton Peele. They both have youth children and so this book is bound to

be a value. Thanks, Cheerfully, Carol

I wholeheartedly agree.

It sounds like you may have misunderstood. I had no problem overall with

what he was saying, and though I was going to meetings I was already too far

out of the AA minset to be defending AA.

Maybe I originally misread the part about Alateen, but I seem to recall

he said it was a part of AA (when it's actually a part of Al-Anon). I'll

have to reread it. This may have been in " The Truth about... " instead - I

have both of those books.

The Diseasing of America and the Truth about Addiction and Recovery were the

only glimpses of sanity that I could find when I first started the descent to

hell (i.e...AA, 12 step therapy, etc.) Dr. Peele has been very helpful and has

provided me with a small arsenal of information to use in the battle.
