uterine polyp surgery

Sorry, this is a bit off topic...I've been diagnosed with a rather

large uterine polyp. 2.something cm.

The gynecological oncologist I saw when I needed another opinion on

an ovarian cyst (which has now resolved on its own) wants to remove

the polyp through a hystero type surgery. I DON'T want to have

surgery although I scheduled the thing for 8 days from now. I don't

like the idea of general anesthetic or any messing with my body! He

said it must come out because although they are rarely malignant they

have to be checked for that.

Has anyone had a uterine polyp and had it removed? Is it always

necessary? The radiologist said this is the reason for my painful

periods although there is a 6cm fibroid there. The doc said it may or

may not be. Anyone with experience in this?

Silly question I'm sure...but, they can't take a 6cm fibroid out

through hysteroscopic means, can they? I imagine between size and all

the bleeding involved in myomectomy it isn't done this way.

Thanks for any info you can provide:-)

Hi, Holly. I had a uterine polyp removed several years

ago - I was not under a general anaesthetic: it was

done vaginally and I was given Demerol (I think) - so

I was awake but not really aware. Perhaps mine was

smaller than yours is. After I had recovered from the

procedure, my periods went back to being 5-7 days only

(although they are still heavy at times) - recently I

have had more prolonged bleeding again, but that may

be b/c I am perimenopausal. Or b/c the fibroids have

grown. I hope removal of your polyp also gives you

some relief.
