When I was pregnant with my first child, I had gestational diabetes. Mine

was controlled with diet. He is 17 now, so let me see what I remember, lol.

I can have small portions of most everything, as long as it wasn't fried.

Keep a watch on how much carbohydrates you eat. No sweets, even fruit. I

could have one piece of fruit a day, if I had canned fruit it was to be

packed in water not syrup. Eat 6 small meals a day instead of 3 large ones.

I can't think of anything else right off, I am sure there will be more

suggestions coming from others also.

I just finished reading your post. I take it you are the one with

the gestational diabetes. My daughter who lives in Florida had it

with her pregnancy & when I was recently diagnosed, she told me her

Dr.'s advice. She said that her patients who are diabetic (T2)

whether is it gestational or just onset should count their carbs at 3

meals of 40g carbs & 2 snacks at 25g carbs. Don't skip meals or

snacks & you'll be fine. There are lots of ways to control your

diabetes, but this is just her Dr.s plan.

On the subject of canned fruit which was mentioned here in another

reply, I've never seen canned fruit in water. I'm not positive, but

I think she might have meant it should be packed in juices as opposed

to heavy syrup which is mostly sugar on the latter.

If you need more info, do like I did & do a search on diabetes,

diabetes forums or message boards, diabetic recipes, etc. If you

will read up on gestational diabetes on the web, you will find it is

nothing to fool with for you & your babies sake.

And Congratulations! Enjoy that new baby!

NHI and welcome. Even though it was 8 years ago I too had

Gestational Diabetes and I controlled it with Diet alone. A good

place for advice is www.ivillage.com they have some EXCELLENT forums

for mothers in the parenthood section.

I found that filling up on leafy things helped me alot. I also went

and bought me some 4oz cups. So if I wanted some apple juice I

filled it up 1/2 way and the other 1/2 with water. I also as long as

I was able walked to get the blood going. I ate fruit in 'its own

juice' as they called it I would drain it run it through some water

and then eat it, lol lol. I lived in Philly at the time and was

CRAVING cheesesteaks I would buy one give 2/3 away and then I would

just eat the insides with a fork not the bread, lol.

Surprisingly when you are with child you automatically take so much

better care of yourself. I'm happy to report my daughter was born

healthy she weighed 5 lbs 15 oz. and though her sugars were a little

low after they cut the cord she had no severe ill effects and she's

just fine today. So check out that site I mentioned above and I wish

you all the best.
