Guest guest
I would suggest going to the clinic for speech pathology at Nova Southeastern University. You would need to have them do a speech evaluation; then they would set you up for therapy. At her age, it might be 1/2 hour twice a week. I believe the phone number is Good Luck! Speech therapy I am trying to get some guidance on speech therapy. I live in Weston, have 3 daughters (5 years old, 2 1/2 years and 10 months). My 2 year old is on the spectrum and I am new to the autism maze. Wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a good speech therapist who takes insurance. My daughter has no words, few gestures and lots of sensory issues. Is the Dan Marino Center the best, or I've heard about Dimensions, and a few other facilities. I just don't want to waste my precious 30 visits anywhere and want to help my daughter communicate without tantrums. My life is just so difficult now. Guest guest
Hi, my name is Glenn, and my son has all the same issues, tantrums, sensory stuff, non verbal communication only- he will not eat any food even, that has other stuff in it, like chocolate chip cookies, or blue berry muffins, nothing hard or cold or wet either LOL We went to the Children's Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Ft Lauderdale and they helped us cover the expenses the insurance does not cover (AETNA leaves huge gaps) until he turns 3 saturday LOL.. Everyone in Broward is eligible under Part-C. We took him to Broward Medical Center in Ft Lauderdale 2 -3 times a week (I'm not sure where Weston is, but it took us almost an hour to get there from Pembroke Pines due to traffic and the draw bridge and the railroad tracks lol) They are really, really, great, he has Sharise for speech and for OT and they really LOVED my son, and he is NOT easy. If Weston is not in Broward County I hope someone knows someone like these people in whatever county it is that you live. Glennie Det@... wrote: I am trying to get some guidance on speech therapy. Guest guest
, since you have two other young children, have you considered home therapy? I found when my son was that age he did better in our home environment. I also liked that I was able to watch from another room and get ideas of what the therapist was working on so that I could do similar activities between sessions which speeds up the process. We use Sheri Feldman & Associates for our home therapy-. When my son was 2 years old he too had many sensory issues. We did many things to address those problems and he became “desensitized” to many things that once bothered him. We used very large storage containers and filled it with rice, we did many things with the containers that helped him for example we put favorite characters hidden in the rice and as he dug them out we used it to model language, (look, it’s Big Birds!) we used it to help with receptive skills “ find Ernie, where’s Grover?). We did a lot of pouring into containers which builds hand muscles. He used to sit in a chair and dig his feet into the bins. I could go on all day with the things we did. I know this helped him. I found brushing helped and we did it as part of our routine getting ready for therapy. I found the more focused and organized he was the better his sessions would be. I have trampoline in the house and a large therapy ball. I find having him jump & bounce then giving him deep pressure with the ball and the mat use to help him a lot as well. When he was upset it helped to lay him on the mat and take the big ball and roll it over him. I know how overwhelming your life is right now because I was there 10 years ago, and it seems like yesterday. The more you can do to help your daughter today will make a difference of what your (and her) life will be like tomorrow. Eat well & take good care of yourself so you can be good for them. Guest guest
We go to Pediatric Therapy Associates in Plantation for speech, through " Therapy for Success " , a new, free speech therapy program that is a continuation of the old Part C, Early Steps, and it starts at age 3. Also, my son will attend the free Pepper Program for speech (they're calling it something else now, I forget the name though, sorry), through the Broward County Schools. You can call and get him tested and he will qualify for either PLACE or Pepper. My insurance doesn't cover any therapy at all, speech or otherwise, so we try to find all the free services we can first! Also, I know that Joe DiMaggio Childerens Hospital in Hollywood gives scholarships for free OT and speech. We talked to them last summer, but never followed up. Email me if you'd like more info! Guest guest
, firstable sorry about my grammar, I will try my best. I am a mother of 6 years old autistic boy. When he was diagnosed he was 2 years, We were lost like you are now. My best advice for you after my expirience with my son is ( Obviously this depent if you can afford these kind of therapists) start working with your child on the basis of Behavior Analysis, there are several therapies outside, but this is the only one that is proved that help our children to undesrtand us and communicate with us, trust me. Speech therapy is good, but first you need to focus in your son's tantrums, speech therapist does not have expirience to handle these behaviours and the session is wasted. You will see how the tuntrums drop when your daugtther understands the power of the word " Oh, I say water and my momy inmidiately give me the water and she will be happy, and I (your daugther ) don't have to pull my hair, cry or kick etc". You will see this change no with a speech therapy , you will see this with a Oral behavior analist. I understand these therapy is expensive $500 a week, 2 hours each session, but is worth. , other is with Preston she charges $25 per hour and $65 per hour for set up the program, I dont know if she continues with the same prices: I recomend Gorgina (she es a good therapist, she works for ,but I dont know her schedule. What I did, after several months I learned a lot how this therapy works, and I decide to work with my son by myself, It,s no easy but you can do it. Good luck , Ivette. Guest guest
Florida Elks Children’s Therapy Services provides free OT in the home to children who are not receiving OT services in the home or school setting. There is an 800# but I couldn’t find it in my notes. I don’t think they offer speech, but maybe they do? In any case you must use your insurance visits first, then they can provide therapy once you are no longer receiving it from insurance. From: sList [mailto:sList ] On Behalf Of Det@...
