Myomectomy following Zoladex injections

Hi there,

I have recently been diagnosed as having fibroids, these were

discovered last December when I miscarried at 6 weeks. On external

examination the Dr asked if my dates were correct as my uterus was

the size of a 16 week pregnancy, a scan showed my what appeared to be

one large and several small large fibroids, this was a week prior to

the miscarriage.

Following the miscarriage I was referred to a Gynaecologist who

attempted to perform a laproscopy and hysteroscopy in March. My

uterus reaches my bellybutton and despite him knowing this he still

cut me open but could not proceed any further with the laproscopy.

I then had another scan and went back to the gynae in June. I still

haven't seen the man himself only his various staff and don't really

have the full picture but have been told that the main fibroid is

approximately the size of an orange and they think there are 5 or 6

other fibroids throughout my uterus which are forming one mass. My

uterus is also misshapen.

The decision has been taken to start zoladex injections starting on

14 August for a 3 month period before performing a myomectomy on 8

November. The only indication I have been given of any possible side

effects is that I may suffer from hot flushes and a dry vagina.

At least following over 10 years of heavy painful periods I now know

what is wrong, my uterus is extremely enlarged and is so painful I

cannot lie on my stomach, I have frequent back pain, and suffer from

what feels like period pain 7 - 10 days every month in addition to

the usual agonies prior to and during my period.

I live in Bristol in the UK and I would like to hear from anyone out

there who has had Zoladex injections and/or a myomectomy, and whether

they have since become pregnant following this procedure.

Apologies for such a long message.

Helen

Hello,

My girlfriend told me about an article that she read in a magazine and

connected me to this website/email group. I can't thank her enough for

finding it for me. I have been diagnosed as having fibroid tumors. I just

came from the doctor today. I never thought I wanted to have kids but now I

am considering it. I am 35 years old and weigh 103 lbs.. My gyno said that

my uterus is the size of someone that is 20 weeks pregnant. So needless to

say, it is starting to show. It looks like I am pregnant. Thank goodness

that I don't have other symptoms that I have read about. If it wasn't for

the physical size of my stomach, I wouldn't know that they were there, except

when it's time to empty my bladder. The scope that was done today revealed

that the fibroids were on the outside of my uterus. He has prescribe Lupron

(an injection)....I don't know if it is similar to Zoladex, however, he said

that I would probably experience hot flashes...sounds like they are similar.

He is hoping that this will shrink the fibroids and then we will schedule a

myomectomy. My two older sisters have had fibroids...last year one had a

myometomy (by my doctor) and the other sister had a hysterectomy. They are

both much bigger than I am and had lots of problems. I was just wondering if

anyone has heard of Lupron and the pro/cons about it. I am really nervous

about this whole thing and I am just thankful that I have found this group.

It's nice to know that others can relate to what I am going to. Sorry for

the long message. This is my first time! (smile)

I took Lupron for 3 months before my surgery. I didn't have any

side-effects (hot flashes are the most common side-effect). I eat a fair

amount of soy products and think this may have been why I didn't experience

those side-effects. Unfortunately, I got no shrinkage from the Lupron

(which may also have been due to my soy consumption--I don't really know).

The good thing for me, though, was after the 2nd week of being on it, I

stopped bleeding for the whole 3 months. That was great for me as my

fibroid was causing horrible bleeding. (It was inside the uterus as

opposed to yours which is outside)

Good Luck,

Sydney

Sydney,

Thanks for the information. I haven't gotten my first injection yet, I

go next week sometime. However, I want to do some more reading about Lupron.

I don't want to go through the symptoms of menopause, especially if it's not

for sure that the tumors will even shrink. But I guess it will be worth a

try. I am going to do some more reading about the medication. Has anyone

else used Lupron?
