Guest guest
Pete - in the US, homelessness is regularly explained in terms of " addiction, " and addiction is assumed to be due to genetic susceptibility. All of this is not very far at all from nazi eugenics - the most respected medical experts in Germany in the 1930s were searching for the biological basis of antisocial behavior. Of course, they assumed Jewish heritage was an important contributant. Have I suggested to you before that you ought to read Weinreich? (Weinreich, Max 1946 Hitler's Professors: The Part of Scholarship in Germany's Crimes Against the Jewish People, NY: Yiddish Scientific Institute). It is a truly remarkable book. Two things are shocking 1) that the best minds in German academia, even Nobel winners, were so easily recruited, and, 2) the technical and methodological sophistication of the concept of [Jewish] materialism. Materialism as a " disease " was seen to be the underlying cause of most social inconformity and personal distress. The Nazi doctors believed only a spiritual cure could save individuals, and, indeed, the nation as a whole. If you read this book with an open mind, I think you will detect the parallels to today's " codependency " concept. ---------- > > To: 12-step-freeegroups > Subject: Re: Why SO MANY get worse or die - especially ofinterest ... > Date: Friday, February 05, 1999 3:20 PM > > Hello Folks > > Went to an interesting lecture abt the sociopolitics of bioreductionism > yesterday. amongst the various disorders for which " gene therapy " has been > suggested as a possible cureby *mainstream* geneticists, among the usual > suspects, addiction, etc., there is apparently " homelessness " ! > > Pete > ---------------------- > " Never name the well from which you will not drink. Guest guest
I dont know of any secular support-group that would take an overeater that has the number of meetings of OA. London's a big, lonely place; I find it hard to make friends and I get terribly lonely. The only lover I have had in 15 years I met thru OA. I hear ya... I'm lonely too. Funny, but I'm in the country and it's a lonely place here too. Habits die hard, and I find that I'm developing a soft spot for my nemesis XA. HELP! Somebody HELP! In other >words, " (fill in the blank) Anonymous. " I've never liked the usage of " XA " for that here. It reads too much like " Ex-AA " , which describes many of us, or the (now virtually dead) xaa list (and on that note it's great that there's this much traffic here, and it's not in reaction to a few troll posts, as has happened on XAA). I've liked *A, as I've seen used on the Fidonet Recovery echo, but this presumes knowing the 'wildcard' meaning of * on command-line computer interfaces such as on unix, cp/m or MSDOS, a knowledge that is less common among computer users these days. ----- http://www.mindspring.com/~benbradley/seasons_greetings.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Hello Felix I'm sorry if youre the guy I swore at, but if you are those posts looked like XA apologism - I am aware that some professionals do consider CBT to be like the Steps, but I think this view is mistaken; it is only by elaborate twistings of meanings, almost certainly not intended by the original authors, that such a comparison can be arrived at. It is rather like the " Atheist 12-stepper " oxymoron. The 11th Step states (I quote from memory): " We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, *as we understood Him*, seeking only to know His will for us and the power to carry it out. " Now, God, as an atheist understands " Him " - DOES NOT EXIST - and hence to a true atheist this step is impossible. At this point the " Anything can be your Higher Power " argument appears. This phrase itself is disingenous, since if it really addressed the G word, the slogan would be " Anything can be your GOD. " Steppers neve say this of course. Ok, maybe the 12-steps can be mangled into something resembling CBT; they may actually have some value in some aspects, as I have talked abt talking abt for quite some time (humor intended). However, why bother with mangling? Why not just rip them up and start all over again with what you are trying to twist them into resembling? Also, despite all the mangling done by 12-step counsellors and fraught XA newbies, nobody has ever changed a single word of the Steps (other than to extend them to areas other than alcohol) - even to substitute God with " Higher Power " . Guest guest
No problem Felix. Why would you have not have replied, or replied differently? > Pete, > > I've been away and catching up on my email. I didn't realize there were > further emails reqarding your situation.
