You might find it useful to visit YANA

- You Are Not Alone Now www.yananow.net a site set up for newly

diagnosed people. The first section gives some basic information in plain

language with links to more complex and technical sites. The second section of

the site is where men are invited to tell their prostate cancer stories and how

they arrived at their decisions regarding treatment. Many people have mailed to

say how useful they have found this, especially because most of the men are

happy to respond to specific questions. The section of the site can be found by

clicking the link labelled Experiences or going to http://www.yananow.net/Experiences.html

But in any event, please post some details of

your diagnosis – your Age, your PSAs leading up to the diagnosis, your

Gleason Score and Staging (these terms are all explained on the YANA site) and any questions you might have. Just

remember – there are no dumb questions. We all started off where you are

Welcome to all of the new members.

My 45 yo dh goes to his third surgeon tomorrow for a consult for the da Vinci procedure. The first surgeon who was the original urologist who did the biopsy doesn't perform the procedure. The second doctor was awesome, but our insurance only covered the doctor and the procedure...NOT the hospital! grrrrrr..... The doctor we are seeing tomorrow was referred by the 2nd and we made sure all was covered by the insurance (live & learn).

was told in April that his biopsy showed PCa with a gleason of 7 after having his annual PSA was elevated. He is the 3rd in his family to be diagnosed with it. I'm so grateful that he made sure to be checked on a regular basis, because it was only due to his PSA results (no symptoms including negative DRE) that it was discovered.

I look forward to hearing about your experiences with the procedure.

Tina,

There is uncertainty in every aspect of prostate

cancer, from diagnosis to treatment choice, but the one thing that comes

through time and again is that the best results are associated with the best

practitioners. From my perspective, the choice of treatment is less important

than the skill of the person carrying out the procedure. So, the best

radiotherapist will, I believe, produce a better result than the poor surgeon –

and vice versa. One of the problems we all face in making a treatment decision

is that much of the material quoted in support of various treatments may be

based on the results of an outstanding person or team, and unless we have

access to those people, there is no guarantee that the results will reflect

what is claimed.

So it is with the length of surgery –

when laparoscopic surgery for prostate and robotic procedures were first

introduced to the US,

the procedure took much longer than normal surgery. As the surgeons

gained experience, the time for procedures reduced rapidly, BUT…. the surgeon

still has to deal with an individual patient and factors such as the size of the

prostate, the position of the tumour, the physical condition of the patient,

all may affect surgery time.

These, and other factors can also affect

the incidence of side effects or morbidity. We are all different and we all

react in different ways. For example I have keloid scars – scars that are

thick and wide – and for someone like me, surgery carries a greater risk

of the side effects associated with thick scar tissue.

I'm surprised at how the length of surgery time varies!

Also didn't know about the drainage issues...............

Alan alwalrus999@... Greetings to the new members. I was diagnosed with PCa a few months ago following a biopsy. My cancer is stage T2c with a gleason of 3+4. I have chosen Brachytherapy as my treatment of choice and have recieved a Lupron injection (hormones) to shrink the size of my prostate. The Lupron is not pleasant and lasts 4 months, so I'll be having my proceedure late in September. If I have any advice it's to do your homework, listen to everyone's opinions about what you should do.... then follow your gut. For myself, I've found reading the archives of this and other prostate cancer forums was of tremendous help to me, not just in making a choice, but also in feeling better about my chances for a positive outcome.
