Guest guest
Joyce, Please don't be discouraged!! If you can do 8 minutes at 1.1 than stay there for awhile. You can only do what your body will let you. If 8 is too much drop back to 7. I would think it would be better to stop before your O2 plummets and the coughing, choking and gagging starts. Having to cope with that wears you out for doing anything else as you said. At the rehab went to there were several folks who just did the recumbi bike or one of the other sitting down machines. Those are a completely valid workout. Joyce you need to do what your body will allow you to without killing yourself. It's a hard balance to strike. I have one question... are you using nasal canula or a mask when your exercising? If your only using cannula ask if they think using a mask will help. I resisted it when they suggested switching me to the mask but it made all the difference in my ability to stay on the treadmill while keeping my sats at a safe level. Of course your probably already using a mask but I thought I'd mention it. Joyce I don't think your progressing slowly at all. I think your working very hard to achieve whatever you can with the limitations you've been dealt. $90 a week is alot but it's an investment in staying alive and as healthy as possible if you can possibly manage it! Go get 'em girl!! Beth in NY Fibrotic NSIP 06/06 "At the evening of life we shall be judged on our love." St of the Cross Beth - Rehab questions Beth, I am on 1.1 speed on the treadmill, but not getting past 8 minutes without my 02 plummeting. I spend more time coughing and gagging than walking. After this bout today, I got back on and did 6 more minutes. This is my third week. Shouldn't I be making better progress than this. My legs are sooooo weak. My feet drag on the treadmill. They are working on my legs with weights (I am up to 2 lbs, woo hoo). I like the Nustep but don't have time for it usually because I take so much time up coughing and spitting. Keep in mind that this is costing $90 a week in copays! I do the stretches and most of the excersizes at home. I don't seem to have time for anything but working to stay alive. All the huffing and puffing, nebs, percussion, draining, etc. I am not getting discouraged, yet. Just want to know if I am progressing really slowly. Guest guest
Joyce, I know that rehab is very hard! I have been at the levels you are describing and even lower. I started on the treadmill 3 years ago at .5 miles an hour. My sat would not stay up. So I did the NuStep and some easier exercises. Now I walk on the treadmill at 2.0 miles an hour on 3 liters of oxygen and my sat stays in the 90s. It has taken me 3 years and lots of physical therapy to get to the point where I am now. Sometimes I think physical therapy is much better than pulmonary rehab. I learned that the treadmill is the hardest machine for pulmonary patients. I love the NuStep and the bicycle and the arm bicycle, which gets the heart rate up, while seated. I am now suffering from this bad air which is coming from the fires in South Georgia and North Florida. I coughed up some wicked stuff today! Good luck on your rehab and hang in there. I know it is hard. Jane IPF 12/1998 Dalton, Georgia aka pianolady_musicgirl P.S. Hi Beth >> > Beth,> > I am on 1.1 speed on the treadmill, but not getting past 8 minutes> without my 02 plummeting. Guest guest
Hi Queen, I think you are doing wonderful. Remember when I got this dreadmill from my son. I was doing 2 min. on .05 for two weeks. I am only up to 6 or 7 min. at 1,5 cause I quit for a while until I read you were doin it so I'm givin it a go again. Anything we do has to help. Guest guest
Beth, No, I am not wearing a mask. I dread doing that....but if they think it will help, I will. They seem resistant to turning my 02 up. I told her yesturday that I thought it would be better to up my 02 as needed so that the plummet and coughing does not happen. I could stay on the dreadmill a little longer. She agreed and we are going to do it that way next time. My 02 will hold steady, then slowly begins to drop.....when I get to 91-92, the bottom just drops out and within a couple of minutes I am in the 70's or worse. Weird. No, I am not getting discouraged. I just needed to compare with those in rehab. You helped me a lot. I don't feel quite to pityful, now! Guest guest
Thanks, Jane, That is reassuring. I want to give it my best shot. I have been lazy about staying active. Actually the doc had told me not to try doing much without medical supervision. So, for the last couple of years, I have done nothing. My legs are so weak. I am so scared of having to sit in 'the chair'....I want to stay on my feet. Please stay indoors or run away from home. That smoke will kill you. We all need to do a rain dance. We are short of rain here, too. The farmers are so worried. Guest guest
Peggy, I hate the dreadmill....I always have. I love the Nustep machine. My nurse told me that Sears makes a knock off. I am going to go look at them. You would like that a lot too. It is sitting....yet it works your arms and legs. When I find it, I will send you the info. It is nice to know another 'Lazy Daisy'. Guest guest
Hi Peggy! The air up here in Northwest Georgia was the worst yet! I did not know this until 11:00 am when I went to the chiropractor. All my other errands involved going in and out quickly or going to the drive-thru. I had to get my daughter's medicine because we have to take it to her this weekend. We will only be gone about four or five hours and my hubby is driving. I saw on the Atanta news just a few minutes ago that the humidity is building up and North Florida may get rain. SEND IT ON UP HERE WHEN Y'ALL ARE FINISHED WITH IT! Jane IPF 12/1998 Dalton, Georgia aka pianolady_musicgirl P.S.
