Guest guest
Regina - I did not notice any die-off symptoms when Zachary started the diet. It wasn't until 3 weeks into the diet that I started to realize that he was making changes. Zachary 4.4 ASD? SCD 4 months
Guest guest
Hi, everyone, My son has been on SCD for four days. I took away sugar, potatoes and rice last week. (GF/CF for 1 1/2years) We have seen some slight improvements and more solid bowel movements, but nothing to suggest a die off. Has anyone else witnessed this and still have positive long term results? I am slowly adding more legal foods. He is always STARVING!!! Thanks Regina Mother of four 4 1/2 scd 4 days gf/cf 1 1/2 years
Guest guest
Welcome Regina, When I started the diet I did have any noticeable die-off (no lethargy, fatigue, headaches etc.) but I have made enormous gains. I was also extremely hungry. I suppose I was feeding my body instead of the bacteria down in the " fermentation tank " (as Elaine calls it). About two weeks after starting SCD I did have a massive breakout on my face, but that cleared up within days and has been quite amazing since. I always kind of thought that the huge appetite was a type of " die off " symptom. BTW, I now eat more reasonable sized servings. Guest guest
I didn't see the usual die off signs with Adam. His stools were always soft and sometimes worse, so if they were " worse " at the start of SCD I didn't notice and it wasn't unusual. By end of the first week he had solid, formed, log-like, brown stools. A couple of days later I got unsolicited comments from school about how happy and cooperative he was. We were noticing subtle improvements in language at home. He started keeping his shoes on after school (I didn't care either way, but he used strip them off the minute he got home - now he hardly seemed to notice they were on). Within a month, he had to draw a picture for school. He'd never drawn anything but a scribble. He drew a stick person - without my forcing him to!! He has now been on the diet 3 months. There was a definite point in Dec. and another this week where I am seeing again a jump (subtle, but definite) in complexity/maturity of his language. So yes, here is an example of a child without obvious die off symptoms that has done well and continues to improve. I just got back a urinary organic acid test done in Dec. He still has SIGNIFICANT yeast and bacterial overgrowth, but it is improving. P.S. the starving child thing is very common. Hang in there and DON " T give him stuff you think he is not ready for. Just give him lots of whatever it is that you have added that works for him. Most kids hunger abates after a couple of weeks, although I've read some reports that have taken a couple of months. -- Sue, mom to Adam and SCD 3 months We have seen > some slight improvements and more solid bowel movements, but nothing > to suggest a die off. Guest guest
My two kids didn't show die-off; they just started making gains, slowly but surely. I, however, had miserable die-off. I spend Day 8 sick in bed, throwing up, with my entire body aching. That experience was what convinced me we should stick to this diet.
