It sounds like a lot of you are well experienced in this fibroid stuff maybe you could give some advice to a worried woman. I have had my scan and been told that I have 2 fibroids the size of large oranges and that my GP will advise me to have a hysterectomy. I do not want anymore children but am still worried. I have many questions for the gyneacologist and am now waiting for an appointment should be no longer than 7 days. Could anyone tell me what it is like to have a hysterectomy I have been told that I may be able to keep my ovaries. The doctor said it is not the end of the world but it feels like my world is going to change drastically. I am a manager of a training centre for young socially excluded kids and do not want too much time off, also I have been told that I cannot even make myself a cup of tea for the first 2 weeks. Guest guest Posted July 20, 2001 Report Share Posted July 20, 2001 I, like many women here, feel you should research all your options before going down the hysterectomy route. Hysterectomy is a viable option but I feel should be a last resort, there are so many other ways to approach this problem. For one, you didn't mention what your symptoms are or your age. If you have no symptoms and are close to menopause, you may not need to do anything at all. Secondly, you should look at the alternatives of UAE (MUCH less invasive than hysterectomy) and myomectomy first. Granted, UAE does probably not maintain fertility but clearly if you are considering hysterectomy, that is not a concern. UAE (uterine artery embolization) is used to cut off the blood supply to the fibroid and has good (but not perfect) results. Many women get shrinkage of their fibroids this way, it can take 6 months to 2 years for the shrinkage, so if your symptoms do not allow for this time frame, that may not be an option either. But if you are going the surgery route, why not have a myomectomy. Some people have no problems have no problem with hysterectomy, some do. Since you can't tell ahead of time which one you will be, why take the risk when another alternative is available. You are signing up for 6 weeks recovery anyway, why not try and keep everything (except the fibroid tumor?) I wish you luck, and if you do ultimately decide on hysterectomy, that it was a decision based on knowing all the alternatives and then CHOOSING that one rather than having your DOCTOR choose it for you. I think it probably depends on your skin type and the person setting you up with it. I had a mastectomy and 6 mo of chemo but no radiation. I have realized that I'm not alone, just didn't know that there would be so many unanswered questions. I have had the lumpectomy with sentinal nodes that were negative. 2.4 cm tumor. I was told by the surgeon that she got it all. Also the path. report backs up what she told me. I will be 73 years old on the 10th of Jan. 1.] Why in the world should I subnit to radiation with the risk of serious burns from the treatment? I have 2 friends that were badly burned, one skin only. The second had a lung burned so badly that she has lost 1/3 of the lung and has battled with collaosed lung problems three times! 2.] Are there any radiation facilities that gurantee not to do more harm than good? I have never just followed the path of least resistance. I'm having difficulty in even accepting the idea that more is good without enough background to back up their claims. My name is , I am the 31 year old wife to and we have two daughters.. is 4 (12-9-98) and is soon to be three (9-18- 00). I am not a breast cancer fighter or survivor and I wanted to make that clear...so that if any of you are uncomfortable with me being here...I can leave and not take it personally. I am a Registered Nurse for Indiana University. I work in an infusion area and give alot of chemo. We, obviuosly, give alot of chemo to breast cancer patients. I love my job and reading your thoughts and suggestions this past week has been inspirational to me. By hearing your thoughts and stories,I feel I can learn to relate to mypatients a bit better and offer suggestions where I can from the advice you give to one another. No one knows like someone that has been there, right? Plus I just recently lost my 54 year old father to another form of this horrid disease...he fought throat cancer for many years and passed quielty and peacefully at home this past December. So Ive been on the nurse end,as well as the family and hospice end. Anyway, thats my story and rationale for requesting admission into your group. That known...you all can decide wether or not me being here bothers you or upsets you or just makes you plain uncomfortable. I will understand and leave.
