I am an adult with Crohn's, and the month of December, my two little

ones brought home 4 varieties of viruses; throw-up flu, a cold, a cough,

and the grand finale of them all, the dreaded flu that was killing off

people. (I feel so proud I came through unscathed!) Though I did not

come down with full-blown symptoms with them all (except the last one,

unfortunately); each and every time, my bowel symptoms would regress,

irregardless of the food I was eating. So yes, the viruses will

definately effect a sensitive bowel.

Since we cannot eat the BRAT diet, and I was not tolerating fruits

either, I just ate chicken soup completely blended, a small bowl of

yogurt and scrambled eggs. That's pretty much it, for about 20 days.

My looser stools eventually cleared up, but I was pretty sensitive for a

few weeks after. (Keep in mind, the last flu LASTED over two weeks.) So

keep it simple, and give it time.

Zachary has been sick 2 times in the 4 months we have been on SCD and both

times it has shown in his stools. The 2nd time, I did give him Children's

Chewable Motrin one time so that may have played a role. Both times he's been

sick, it has taken about 1 week for his stools to return to normal and 2 weeks

for

his behavior and language skills to return to where they were before he got

sick.

Hi Louisa,

When my kids get D from a stomach virus/cold they tend to lose their appetites.

If they won't eat at all I give them diluted juices 1/2 water & 1/2 juice or

with extreme D I make up a batch of the electrolyte mix

http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowlege_base/kb/electrolyte_drink.htm.

When I do get them to eat I keep their diet as close to the intro as possible -

chicken soup maybe some well cooked vegetables. My kids tolerate carrots well.

If they won't eat the soup I take the chicken from the soup. I always take all

raw fruits and vegetables out of their diet when they have D - it just makes it

worse. As they get over the cold/virus and their bm's improve I slowly

reintroduce their regular foods.

Hope that helps. :)

Sue, I just read your post and had a similar question. My son,

Spencer has a cold, and he has diarrea. I questioned whether it was a

food issue, but decided " no " since we have not introduced any new

foods to his diet. Prior to the cold and diarrea, he had pretty

decent trophies. Here is my question: Prior to SCD, we would do the

BRAT diet for d.: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. We don't do

applesauce or bananas here, and obviously we're not going to give

grains. Should we just let the d. run its course? Anyone else out

there have experience with d. from a virus.

And do remember that, in a healthy human body, sometimes diarrhea is one natural

way of clearing toxins when there's a viral invasion. :)
