Hi Csaba,

Well, I am female, but during my college years I worked in the medical office

of a doctor who treated many patients with high blood pressure, and I can

tell you that some BP medications do have an effect on sexual drive and

sexual response.

Pierre is our resident expert on BP medications, so perhaps he can give you

more detail on which particular meds cause this side effect. I would

definitely mention it to your doctor though and see what he advises.

Good luck with this!

You are very welcome. It is a somewhat sensitive subject isn't it. I am not

sure though that testosterone levels are the likely culprit. I would think

there is a strong chance that it is your BP meds.

I take an ace inhibitor (Lisinopril) and it doesn't seem to have any negative

impact on me. I just really can't remember which BP meds in particular

caused the sexual side effects. College was too many years ago!

Hi fellows,

I'm mostly interested in male responses (experiences) but females are

welcome as well. I was diagnosed with IGAn for 3 years now, but I'm

taking blood pressure drugs for more than four years. Mainly ACE

inhibitor (monopril) and for almoust a year (to the advice of my

nephr.) I combine with norvasc (calcium channel blocker). In the past

years (2-3) my " sexual apetite " has dropped dramaticaly. Obviously my

wife is not happy at all about this and I don't know what to do

about. I was crazy about womens in the past but now I am almost

insensible to the presense of attractive females.

Without getting in too much detail, I just want to say it's dramatic

and I feel lost. I'm wondering if this is caused by the BP drugs?

Does anyone out there experienced something similar?

Thanks in advance,

Csaba

Thanks . I mentioned this problem to my neph and he ordered a

blood test to check the testosterone level. But this will be sometime

in mid May.

It's very hard for me to deal with this because I'm youg (33), I'm in

relatively good condition, I do not smoke or drink...It's hard to

speak about this with " normal " people.

You can have libido problems like that with more advanced kidney failure.

Blood pressure drugs tend to affect ability more than desire, if you know

what I mean. On the other hand, they can depress people a bit, and I suppose

in that way they might affect desire (Norvasc and its ilk can do this). So,

I guess it's hard to tell, but you should discuss it with your doctor. The

ACE inhibitors aren't really known to affect people that way.

It's not a bad idea to test for testosterone level. Chances are it will be

fine, but you never know.

Do you think it's because of the BP meds?

You have got to be kidding!! I thought it ws menopause that was doing the lost

libido problem with me. But you say it can be advanced kidney problems? Maybe

I have something more than a transplant to look forward to. I don't even like

reading a racey book. I have found myself skipping the good parts. I have been

thinking that I was just not interested in any of it any more and quite francly,

I missed the closeness of the whole problem.

Unfortunately, Monopril is one of those meds that can cause a drop in libido

(I'm a nurse as well as an IgAN sufferer). If you're noticing that this side

effect is quite bad, perhaps you could ask your neph about being put onto

another ACE inhibitor, as not all of them have this side effect.

Well, menopause can also have an effect on libido, too, unfortunately, due to

the decrease in female hormones present in the system.

Thank you Jennie. I MUST try something different (maybe the accupril)

otherwise my marriage will go to hell.

Cs. I had the same drop in sex drive , it was very disturbing as I was

very active. While in the process of trying different meds my

Nephrologist got me using Viagra, this solved the short term problem and

is a great solution untill the right meds are found. Talk to your Neph ,

and maybe give it a try.

I tell you one thing, it would take a lot more than a medication or just

kidney failure to affect my libido! :)

....well, maybe the morning after dialysis :)

It does happen to some though, and it's something to seriously discuss with

the doc.

Hi Erna,

I take Lisinopril, but it definitely has not affected my libido. I think my

husband probably wishes it would :-) I think I have a very overactive libido.

Ohhhh Pierre you are naughty but I like it, I think we should call you

'Stud Muffin from now on LOL!!!!

I suffer from a low libido, but as my kidney function is relatively ok,

I put this down to the constant fatigue and pain, this can have a

disastrous effect on your love life. ly I went through the stage

of feeling very guilty and really accommodating my husband purely out of

thinking I would be a failure as a wife otherwise. This in fact had the

reverse effect, it caused problems between us, and we had a rocky few

months before we sought help, my excellent GP came up trumps and

counseled both of us. Little did I know my husband was doing the same

thing because he felt that was what he should do as a husband. Nowadays

we are happy with the closeness of a cuddle and a good smooch, and

without giving too much information, if something nice happens, well

fine. Communication is key everyone, that is my huge tip for the day on

this subject.

Now that my face is glowing like a beacon I will shut up.

Best wishes

Hi T.

thanks for your reply. Now that I know that there are people out

there with the same problem, it might not be that hard to " digest "

this. I was thinking on taking Viagra as well, but it's so hard to

switch the mind, if you know what I'm talking about. I thought that

situation...

What is your dosis you take? 25 mg or more?

Hi Dimitris,

yes I have. Skin irritation on my scalp which cause dandruff and

sometimes redish irritations along my nose and forehead. I wash my

hair one day and the next day it's itching all over my scalp. I'v

tried so many shampoons...nothing works. Basically the sympthoms are

very similar to seborrheic dermatitis.

What exactly are you experiencing?

cheers,

Hi all,

Well, I am quite amazed but I've finally found a reason to be happy

that my 16 year old son is taking Monopril. He usually has very

pretty girls hanging aroung him, wanting hugs, inviting him to

retreat weekends, graduation, etc. As a mom I don't want him to get

into situations which would bring huge responsibilities at a young

age.

Maybe now I will worry a little less hearing a man's reaction to

Monopril. Has anyone done Lisinopril and observed decreased libido?

(For some reason his ped has given him this new prescription.)

Don't worry about what anyone thinks, it's not just for older people, it

is a very effective solution to a side effect related to this disease. I

have found that even low doses 1/2 of a 25mg tablet to be effective.

Good luck
