Guest guest
Hi Sonja, I too am going to start trying in December again and am trying to get my body back in shape and ready. I am taking a pre-natal vitamin with an additional folic acid pill. Also my husband takes the folic acid as well. We have done this with all three pregnancies I have had in the past. I once met a Pharmacist with a new baby and we were talking about vitamins and the importance of Folic Acid and she said that before trying and while trying to conceive her husband would take Folic acid as well. I was wondering if Krista knew anything about this or has heard of other men doing it. It certainly had no ill effects on my husband, and he just took the same on I did. December is right around the corner and I'm already feeling nervous and excited. Before we try again though I have an appointment with a new RE to find out if she would recommend having the HSG procedure done to look in my remaining tube and see what it looks like from the inside. Take care, Stacey McCoy P.S. Welcome to all our new members!! Guest guest
Dear Sonja, When I was going for my appointment with a high risk doctor about two weeks ago I asked " the group " the same question. There was an overwhelming response that you should have some tests run like the HSG. When I asked the doctor he said he wouldn't recommend it. I'm not going to that doctor anymore and have my first appointment with a new RE on Nov.8. I figure if she decides that it would be a good idea (it's the #1 thing on my list of questions) then I still have enough time to do it before we ttc again in Dec. The timing of the procedure has to be just right.....if I remember correctly right after your period but before ovulation. You might want to have a visit with your doctor and go over what your options are. I have had the HSG procedure done in DEC. 98 and it showed no blockage at all, but then I had a miscarriage and another ectopic just last month. I have mixed feelings about the HSG so I think it's best to talk to your doctor and see what she would recommend. As far as the actual procedure of the HSG I was pretty scared to have it done because I thought it was really going to be painful, I had read a lot about it on some web sites and it sounded painful, but I actually was surprised. Don't get me wrong, it was uncomfortable and at sometimes painful, but it is done and over with so quickly that it was bearable. You might want to get in with your Doc so if you are going to have it done you can time it right! Good luck! Guest guest
Stacey, I do remember hearing something about men taking folic acid as well. You might want to consider a multivitamin for him, since it will be more well-rounded, and you can be sure that he won't be getting too much folic. Too much of a good thing can be bad! Also, did your doctor recommend the extra folic? I have heard that it can be damaging to pregnant women, if too much is taken. I hate to be the Boy Crying Wolf here, since I can't remember the specifics of why too much is bad. That is way off my educational/research level! The HSG will show any large blockages in the tube, but if you want to determine what the true inside of the tube looks like, you will have to have a falloscopy. Some doctors either won't or can't do them. My last RE said that it was just a diagnostic tool, and that if there is node damage, nothing can be done. I was like, DUH. I only want to know what it looks like for MY peace of mind. Not for his future earnings. LOL Take care, Krista
Guest guest
when I spoke with everyone last month, someone suggested the HSG before ttc. I asked my doctor and he said they did one during my surgery and the other tube was fine...although, 2 years ago I had an exploratory lap and they did they HSG and said the tubes were fine, then I had the ep....so who knows. Guest guest
Hi Stacey I would love to know if it makes any difference if your dh. also takes folic acid. I will put mine on it tomorrow! Don't want to sound stupid, but an HSG is a hysterosalphingogram right?(did I spell it right?) Do you think I should consider one? My doctor seems to think that all that is needed is to do a pregnancy test very early on, and to have a vaginal u/s to determine the location of the fetus, but I don't know if I am happy with just that. What do you think? Guest guest
Did he say specifically that they did an hsg during your surgery? I ask because my doctor told me they " checked out " the other tube during surgery, but when I asked him to clarify that, he said it was a visual inspection of the outside of the tube. It was my understanding that hsg's are not done in surgery...but maybe that is just my doctor? As we have said, a normal hsg is not a guarantee that there are no " small " problems that might cause a future ep, but it would certainly show any " big " problems like blockages etc. Even so, I still think it is a good idea, just because women with a history of ep's are more prone to have blockages and the like that would make ttc a waste of time. It was the first thing my doctor suggested when I asked him about fertility problems connected to my ep. Guest guest
, when I ha my surgery last month the doctor said my other tube looked " great " when I had my follow up appointment I asked him to clarify what " great " meant and he said that he could not see from the outside that there were any problems. I don't know if I feel totally comfortable with that, but we shall see what the new RE says. She may say since I had the HSG done not even a year ago that I shouldn't do it, who knows! Guest guest
That's exactly what my doctor said! Hopefully your RE will schedule one regardless...a lot change in a year, and it will help your piece of mind considerably!
