Guest guest
My 10 yr old asd son started the diet one week ago. First for the good news. He has been eating the new foods I have been giving him. It's truley a miracle because this is a child who would throw up on site by just looking at food on someone elses plate!! (hypersensitive olfactory system too). His old school had tried putting him on a food program for years and always gave up because he was so impossible. (I am currently homeschooling). This is what he has been eating; chicken (boiled and roasted), turkey, squash meatballs from beef and veal(new), sneaky pancakes (new), chicken avocado salad (new), zucchini pancakes (new),green beans, broccoli, 3-4 spoons applesauce a day (he doesn't like it) 1-2 cups(max)of watered down grape juice per day and he had 1 banana 2 days ago. He also ate a " cholent " (kosher stew). Cholent is usually meat, potatoes, and barley. When we went gf/cf we substituted rice for the barley. Now that we are SCD, I substituted cauliflower for the rice (and of course no more potatoes) and he didn't realize it!!! Now for the questions: 1. I know it's only been a week, but I read other posts from newbies whose kids either had a good or bad reaction in the beginning. Jordan is exactly the same as always. Stimming, tantrums a few times a day, lots of hand flapping when excited...but no more or less than usual. Is this a typical reaction too? This morning he woke up this way and just sort of danced around for an hour flapping. What could possibly be the cause of such behavior so early in the morning before even consuming any food to react to? 2. How do I know if he has phenol sensitivity? Is it possible he is and I just don't know it since he reacts to just about everything? Should I pull out the juice, apples...? 3. When he had an IGg and RAST done, he scored a 1 on coconut and egg yolks (low sensitivity). Although I don't hold much faith in the accuracy of these tests, should I avoid these foods altogether until later? (I'll be so sad if no more sneaky pancakes). 4. He has not had a bowel movement since last Thursday.(He usually goes every 3-4 days). He won't drink the prune juice. What should I do? Thank you all so much for your help and knowledge (and recipes, Jody)! Suzanne, Mom to Jordan 10, asd, 1 wk on diet
Guest guest
Wow, you're doing great. Those tests aren't always accurate. Who wouldn't love a good " cholent " ? Guest guest
Hi Suzanne, If the early morning behavior is different than usual..... I mean, in terms of timing..... it is probably bacterial/yeast die-off, rather than any sort of food intolerance. So, in effect, the yeast and bacteria that have been giving off their toxins all along, are now giving off the same toxins as they die off...... but in greater amounts. It seems as though you are also seeing improvement..... maybe not directly in behavior.... but certainly his acceptance of all the new foods is a very positive sign for him! Any time we see good things.... however small they may be.... along with any negative, we assume it's die-off and will probably be temporary. Try giving epsom salts baths to help calm and support detox. If he is having any sensitivity to phenols, the baths will help with that, too. I certainly wouldn't give up the eggs unless he has an actual physical reaction to them. Constipation wise, I'd add a magnesium supplement. Magnesium citrate works well. If you really can't get him to take the prune/OJ constipation remedy from Elaine, plain Milk of Magnesia may help and is legal, I believe. Of course, we hope he won't really need that beyond the beginning weeks. Also, just be sure he's drinking a lot..... push those fluids. It's pretty common for kids to be constipated in the beginning as they are adjusting to the changes, but if he's really uncomfortable, you may need to try a glycerin suppository or something like that. Applesauce is " binding " (may exacerbate constipation) for some kids.... and banana can be as well. So.... don't worry about forcing that if he doesn't like it. Keep lots of veggies coming in, though. It sounds like he's trying quite a few different ones but make sure you try to balance the volume..... in other words, you don't want him to be eating 90% meat and 10% veggies. That would constipate anyone! Did you do the intro diet for a couple of days in the beginning?
