Hi Poonam,

Nice to hear from you. I can't believe Aman is 19 months old already!

Is Pushpa your mother or mother-in-law?

My understanding from what you described is that Aman still has a lot of

usable hearing. How much is within the speech banana (have you seen the

actual audiogram)? Does he wear hearing aids yet? (GET THEM ON HIM AS

SOON AS POSSIBLE IF IT WILL HELP!!!!!) Is this a mixed loss or do they

think it's all sensorineural? Has he had a CT scan and are you aware of

any other abnormalities in the ear anatomy? Note that there have been

other neurological reasons why some children with CHARGE Syndrome do not

speak...

Considering his extended stay in the hospital, the babbling may be a

good sign...

Have you started to work with the W. Ross Macdonald School in Brantford

/ or are there other intervenors involved (ie. is he eligible for

services from the CNIB for example)? What do the intervenors say? Is

Aman being stimulated? Does he sign or use any form of communication?

You are welcome to call the audiologists at the Montreal Oral School for

the Deaf for general information. They have had a lot of experience with

cochlear implanted children (but not implanted children with CHARGE).

You are not eligible for services from the school, but I am sure they

will be very gracious and answer your inquiry without discussing your

case specifics. (Irene Hoshko or Danelle Graham at ... you

can say you spoke to Penina's mother on-line!)

Best of luck,

Anne, mom of Penina (CHARGE, 6 3/4)
