I've been doing this for over 20 years and have never been sued, nor have had a coworker sued, or heard of any dispatcher in the area being sued. Departments get sued and have included dispatchers names but only because they were on duty during the incident and the departments handled the legal representation. I've never been afraid of being sued, even when we started doing EMD many moons ago. I can back up everything I say on the phone/in person with policy/state law/local law/emd book. And if I don't know the correct thing to say, I go to a higher authority and get the information. In my opinion, if you're afraid of being sued as an individual, then I think you're in the wrong line of work. Kathy

Nor I... but I know others who have the concern. I happened to remember a prepaid legal organization that came around to some of our training, if I remember correctly they said their service would cover dispatcher liability. I know little of the company and certainly am not endorsing them but I still had their business card, and here's the web page. http://www.prepaidlegal.com/ Weintraut --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Guest guest
You can be sued as a dispatcher. I know first hand. I won't go into all the details, however I came out on top. I did have and continue to have the pre paid legal that was talking about. They were a great help. My Department does not provide a legal team for you if you are sued in civil court. If it is criminal then they will provide a legal team, but civil no. Same with my old department when the civil suit took place. I am not afraid of being sued. Like Kathy said I can back everything up I do with tapes, policy and so on. I think people are out to make a fast buck. They see the light and they run for it. It is part of the job. Last July I was dispatching when an officer shot and killed a naked man standing over a female in her home with a knife. I was just told by the officer that that naked mans family has filed a 2 million $ civil suit against him. He told me that he heard that each and every person involved in the run including calltaker and I will be served papers of suit. So we will see.
